Late on Sunday, it was reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt will make his long-awaited return to action on the card. It seems that disaster has struck once again for the former bantamweight king Dominick Cruz. Having his comeback set for UFC 233 on January 26 opposite John Lineker, that appears to longer be the case as MMA Brasil’s Tarso Doria reports that Cruz has sustained yet another fight canceling injury. Thus prompting the promotion to pursue Cruz’ last opponent, Cody Garbrandt to replace him against the Brazilian.

On August 4, the UFC took over the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California with UFC 227. The card featured two title fights: a bantamweight title rematch between champion TJ Dillashaw and challenger Cody Garbrandt, and a flyweight title rematch between long-time champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson and Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo. Despite the fact that this card featured two title fights, it was not expected to be much of a pay-per-view hit. Bantamweight and flyweight title fights are not typically big business for the UFC, and the rest of the card was not particularly stacked either.

Cody Garbrandt’s time atop the UFC bantamweight mountain was brief. He won the title with a December, 2016 decision defeat of Dominick Cruz, and lost it in his first defense, succumbing to second-round punches from his arch rival TJ Dillashaw in November of 2017. Despite the fact that Garbrandt never successfully defended the title, he was given an immediate rematch with Dillashaw, which headlined UFC 227 last Saturday night. Dillashaw believes Garbrandt got this rare opportunity because the UFC is “hard for” the former champion.

Cody Garbrandt, who came up short to TJ Dillashaw in the UFC 227 main event, was assigned to the same locker room as UFC 227 undercard fighter Marlon Vera, who has recently done a bit of training with Dillashaw. When the both wound up in that locker room at the same time, Garbrandt and his team essentially kicked Vera out, worrying perhaps that he might be spying for Dillashaw. As you can probably imagine, this did not go over well with Vera, who was just hoping to do some training of his own.

Last night, in the main event of the action-packed UFC 227 card, former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt attempted to reclaim the title from the main he lost it to, TJ Dillashaw. Unfortunately for Garbrandt and his legions of fans, this fight did not go as planned, as he was put down by a Dillashaw punch and finished with volley of followup strikes in the first frame. With this outcome, Garbrandt is now 0-2 opposite the current champion, with both of those losses coming by way of knockout. To say he’s in a tough spot would be an understatement.
