Former ringside doctor says Conor McGregor may have been more hurt than many think

The richest fight in combat sports history ended with a 10th round TKO as Floyd Mayweather landed some clean punches that had Conor McGregor wobbling in the ring. Many thought the stoppage was the right call while others claimed it could have gone longer to give McGregor a chance at recovering. Darragh O’Carrol, a former ringside doctor and emergency physician wrote an article for Tonic and gave his professional opinion on the stoppage. With McGregor claiming after the fight that he was more fatigued than hurt, O’Carrol agreed with referee Robert Byrd’s decision to call an end to the fight at the moment he did. O’Carrol explained that Byrd likely didn’t call off the fight due to signs of McGregor just being tired.

Conor McGregor and a couple of his sparring partners from the boxing community have had a bit of a rocky relationship. Prior to the big buzz between McGregor and former two-weight boxing world champion Paulie Malignaggi, “The Notorious” had a bit of a rift with Chris van Heerden, a former IBO champion. McGregor and van Heerden sparred leading up to Conor’s rematch with Nate Diaz at UFC 202. Initially, they had great things to say about each other but things turned south when an edited clip of them sparring showed McGregor getting the better of van Heerden. The former IBO champ then released an unedited clip of their sparring session that showed things much more competitive between the two.

Now that the fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather is all over, it seems referee Joe Cortez can speak about some of the things that happened during McGregor’s training camp. The Hall of Fame referee was brought in McGregor’s camp to ref sparring sessions and give the current UFC lightweight champion a better understanding of what would and wouldn’t be allowed in the ring on fight night. Perhaps the biggest hype leading up to the fight was from within McGregor’s training camp as he and former two-division boxing champion Paulie Malignaggi had a falling out after Malignaggi felt “exploited” with some photos released from their sparring. One photo, in particular, was of Malignaggi getting up off his back from the canvas where it appeared McGregor knocked the retired pro boxer down. Malignaggi claimed it was a pushdown and a video clip released had people debating on whether it was a knockdown or a pushdown.

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor gave fans a fight to talk about before and after they settled things in the boxing ring at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Although not a complete sellout for the live show, many celebrities were in attendance. Cleveland Cavaliers stars from the NBA, LeBron James and J.R. Smith had seats in the house and chatted about the main event between Mayweather and McGregor following the fight. TMZ caught the two talking about the respect they had for Conor McGregor even after his 10th round TKO loss to the undefeated boxing great.

Conor McGregor was not given much of a chance from the majority of the boxing community in the matchup against Floyd Mayweather. Given that Mayweather was regarded by many as the best boxer of his generation and in the talks of all time greats, it was a tall order and the current UFC lightweight champion was more than up for the task.

Many believed that Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor would be the richest fight in the history of combat sports by breaking the 2015 records that Mayweather and Manny Pacquaio set in 2015. Although not a sellout for the attendance at the event, Floyd Mayweather said during the post-fight press conference that they did break the record for the gate and also the pay-per-view record he and Pacquiao set in their fight. “We did break the record tonight for the biggest gate,” Mayweather stated at the post-fight press conference via MMA Weekly. “Me and Pacquiao done $72 million. I think we done somewhere over $80 million in the live gate (with McGregor).”

If you’re reading this, you were probably invested enough in Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather’s fight that you were involved in some debating pre-fight, maybe even post-fight. No matter which side you were on, chances are you argued with someone online or lost/won a bet with a friend in real life. You definitely know some of these conversations got so heated, that a fight was going to break out. Especially in Vegas, where booze rains down like public fountains. Even Brendan Schaub and Nate Diaz got into it backstage. But in a movie theater? Over across the sea in the UK, around 30 people got wrapped up in a fight as the boxing match ended inside the cinema. “‘It was all over as quickly as it started,’ said one person who was in the cinema at the time. ‘But there was probably about 30 people involved. There was only about three security guards. ‘The staff did their best but they were clearly outnumbered. It was clear some of the people involved had been drinking. A spokeswoman for Vue said: ‘Vue screened the fight to over 8,500 customers across 47 cinemas. ‘Cinemas had increased security, strict access policies and procedures and strict alcohol policies in place. ‘We can confirm there was one incident which took place. A devoted Conor McGregor fan pulled off his own mission impossible and now has the photos to prove it. Oliver Regis, a British bartender flew out to Las Vegas, Nevada to watch the highly anticipated money fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. According to The Sun, the British fan bought his $2,500 ticket and made his into the T-Mobile Arena only to find that his seat was near the worst in the house located at the very top.

Both Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor delivered an exciting fight on Saturday night in what was built up to potentially be the richest bout in all of combat sports. Many things were said between the two superstar opponents leading up to the fight and when it was all said and done with Mayweather getting the stoppage in the 10th round, the two athletes showed an incredible amount of respect for one another in the ring and at the post-fight press conference.

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor’s Saturday night showdown is expected to decimate all previous combat sports pay-per-view records, but not everyone who watched paid to do so. Illegally streaming sporting events is common practice, but the number of people who streamed this Mayweather vs McGregor blockbuster is pretty incredible. According to content-security vendor Irdeto (via Variety), illegal steams of the broadcast were hosted by 239 sources. These streams were viewed by a baffling 2.93 million people worldwide. According to Irdeto, 67 of the illegal streams provided online came from well-known streaming sites, though other streams were hosted by sites like Facebook, YouTube, Periscope and Twitch.

Last night, UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor stepped into the boxing ring with one of his most heated rivals, undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. Unfortunately for McGregor and his legions of fans, this fight didn’t go as planned. Instead, the Irishman wilted under a torrent of 10th-round punches, losing by way of TKO as a result. As much as it was a disappointing night for McGregor, however, it was a momentous one for Mayweather. With this win, “Money” will now ride off into the sunset with a fantastic, 50-0 professional boxing record.
