UFC rankings update: Zabit Magomedsharipov climbs at featherweight

The official UFC rankings have been updated in the wake of Saturday’s UFC Moscow card, and as expected there have been a few key changes — though only a few divisions were affected. Most notably, main event winner Zabit Magomedsharipov took a significant climb at featherweight on the strength of his decision win over Calvin Kattar in the main event. Zabit Magomedsharipov was looking to remain undefeated inside the Octagon in the main event of UFC Moscow. There, he was taking on Calvin Kattar, who was coming off of a very impressive knockout win over Ricardo Lamas in June. The winner could very well get the next title shot, so the stakes were high. In the end, it was Magomedsharipov who got the decision win. It was a close fight, with Kattar coming on strong in the third and final round. Yet, it wasn’t enough to beat the Russian.

Calvin Kattar is travelling across the pond to fight on the home turf of his opponent, Zabit Magomedsharipov at UFC Moscow. The featherweights will be headlining the event this Saturday, November 9 inside the CSKA Arena in the Russian capital. Kattar was scheduled to fight his Russian opponent last month in his hometown at UFC Boston. However, the fight was pulled from the card as Magomedsharipov suffered from a blood infection. Now, Kattar is having to acclimatize to Russian conditions and overcome adversity in the form of Magomedsharipov’s loyal fan base.

This Saturday the UFC will return to Russia with the exciting UFC Moscow card. The highly anticipated event was initially being built around the Alexander Volkov vs Junior dos Santos heavyweight showdown which would’ve taken place in the main event. On Saturday night, in the main event of the UFC’s 25th anniversary show in Denver, Colorado, Mexican featherweight contender Yair Rodriguez authored one of the greatest knockouts in UFC history, putting fan favorite Korean contender Chan Sung Jung down with an elbow with just one second left in their five-round battle. With this win, Yair Rodriguez re-established himself as one of the top contenders in the crowded UFC featherweight division, and as a dangerous test for pretty much any of his rivals. That being said, there is one featherweight who is chomping at the bit to fight him: Dagestan’s Zabit Magomedsharipov.

Zabit Magomedsharipov is considered a future featherweight champion by many, but currently, the Russian is still working his way up the featherweight rankings, where he is ranked 15th. Following Magomedsharipov’s win over Brandon Davis at UFC 228, the 27-year-old called out either Chad Mendes or Jose Aldo for a fight. However, Aldo has expressed interest in going up to lightweight, so Mendes seems like the logical option.

Originally, Mexico’s Yair Rodriguez was expected to return to the cage opposite Zabit Magomedsharipov at UFC 228 last Saturday. Unfortunately, Rodriguez was forced out of this contest with an injury, and replaced by Brandon Davis, who Magomedsharipov submitted with an incredible kneebar. Shortly after he submitted Davis, Zabit Magomedsharipov called for a fight with three-time UFC featherweight title challenger Chad Mendes, who recently returned from a long hiatus with a first-round stoppage of Myles Jury. Apparently, however, the Russian star is still very much in the crosshairs of Yair Rodriguez.
