Ahead of the fight, many have questioned whether Penn plans to retire from MMA following the fight on Sunday, regardless of whether he wins or loses. Former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw’s upcoming fight remains a mystery as conflicting details continue to emerge, with no resolution on the conflict between The UFC and Demetrious Johnson to aid fight fans in making sense of the confusion. Dillashaw was initially slated to fight bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt in a highly anticipated bantamweight title fight this summer, however a back injury forced Garbrandt out of the fight. UFC President Dana White then revealed that the plan was to have Dillashaw drop down to flyweight and challenge flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson for the flyweight title in a fight that could have potentially seen Johnson set the UFC record for most successful title defenses.

Saturday morning, the fighters of tomorrow’s ‘UFC Fight Night: Oklahoma City’ hit the scales ahead of their scheduled bouts. Unfortunately for former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks, he once again missed weight for the event, coming in at 188 pound, two pounds over the middleweight limit for non-title fights. This of course marks the third time in Hendricks last 4 fights that he has missed weight. Hendricks previous two weigh-in misses both occurred at welterweight, with this one being his first time missing since moving up to middleweight for his last fight against Hector Lombard.

Following the fight, Nurmagomedov was booked to fight #2 ranked lightweight Tony Ferguson in a highly anticipated interim lightweight title fight that would see the winner fight Conor McGregor for the undisputed title when the Irish superstar returned to the Octagon. Unfortunately for Nurmagomedov, he was taken to the emergency room the night before weigh-ins, and was ultimately pulled from the fight.

Former UFC title contender Anthony Johnson shocked the MMA community when he announced his retirement following his light heavyweight title fight loss to champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 210 in April. “This was my last fight,” Johnson told Joe Rogan in the post-fight Octagon interview. “I didn’t tell anybody. I didn’t even tell Dana White. My coaches knew, my family knew and my friends knew. I didn’t want any distractions. But I have to thank you all for being there for me. I gave my commitment to another job. Something that I have wanted to do for a while. It is not MMA related or anything like that. It is just time for me to move on to something else. I’m tired of getting punched by guys and rolling around on the ground with guys and stuff like that. Ain’t nothing fun about that.”

Over a year ago, Conor McGregor brought in South African boxing champion Chris Van Heerden to help him prepare for his rematch with Nate Diaz. Conor McGregor then posted footage of the pair sparring to his social media accounts, showing himself tagging Van Heerden repeatedly. That didn’t sit too well with Van Heerden, who was quick to fire back at McGregor and release the unedited footage of the sparring session. The footage remains the only footage of McGregor sparring against a professional boxer, however ahead of the Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match on August 26th, Mayweather’s assistant coach Nate Jones spoke to Submission Radio to explain why he isn’t sold on the footage being 100% legitimate.

Thursday morning in New York City, Bellator MMA held a press conference for their highly anticipated Pay-Per View event this Saturday. While the event went off without any major speed bumps, a brief scuffle broke out at one point as MMA legend Wanderlei Silva shoved Chael Sonnen. Fortunately, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker and security guards in attendance were able to diffuse the situation before things got out of hand, like they did during the infamous Silva-Sonnen Ultimate Fighter brawl. Following the event, Scott Coker gave a statement on the matter, explaining that things could have been much worse, and that neither fighter would be facing repercussions for the situation.
