John McCarthy thinks he knows why Jon Jones failed drug tests

Tom Taylor - March 7, 2018

Veteran MMA referee and current Bellator commentator “Big” John McCarthy is becoming one of the most respected voices in MMA. As such, his opinions on the sport’s hot-button issues are always interesting to hear. On a recent episode of MMAJunkie Radio, the veteran referee tackled the issue of former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’s unfortunate brush with USADA. In McCarthy’s opinion, Jones probably didn’t intentionally take a performance enhancing drug, but might be a little careless when it comes to what he puts in his body.

Miesha Tate Responds To Jon Jones Implying She's a 'Quitter'

Justin Golightly - March 3, 2018

At the beginning of this week, Jon Jones finally appeared before the California State Athletic Commission. He subsequently had his license revoked, fined $205K, and will wait to see what length of suspension USADA will hand out. In the midst of the ongoing Jon Jones saga, somehow a feud between him and Miesha Tate developed. She spoke about the CSAC hearing on her regular radio show and said she stopped becoming a fan after being constantly let down. Jones responded publicly and it’s just been on-going since then. @MieshaTate I don’t quit when things get tough for me, I get stronger. You just wait and see, maybe you’ll even find motivation in it. Sucks I lost you as a fan. Enjoy retirement sister

Justin Golightly - March 2, 2018

The latest installment of the saga of Jon Jones is finally nearing the end. At the beginning of this week, Jones appeared before the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), resulting in his license being revoked and fined $205K. Tied with him seemingly forever, longtime rival Daniel Cormier has been quiet on the matter but now that The Ultimate Fighter 27 season has wrapped, Cormier broke his silence about it today. “You know, I wasn’t watching [the CSAC hearing]. I was filming [The Ultimate Fighter 27]. Honestly, I haven’t paid much attention to it. I told you guys that I’ve moved on. You know again, I’ve had to move on. My sole focus is Stipe Miocic. I have disconnected myself from [Jon Jones] and his issues. When things are sorted out, then I guess I’ll pay attention again. I’ve got bigger fish to fry. [I’ve got] Stipe Miocic to [try and] become a two-division champion. Maybe [Jones] will get an opportunity to take both belts from Cormier or something. I don’t know.”

Jon Jones Responds to Miesha Tate After Losing Her as a Fan

Justin Golightly - March 1, 2018

We are finally nearing the end of this next rough chapter in the epic tale of Jon Jones. After his hearing on Tuesday, the California State Athletic commission revoked his license and fined him $205K. He can re-apply for his license as early as August this year, but USADA still has to deal out a suspension on the GOAT candidate. For some fans, like former UFC bantamweight champion Miesha Tate who spoke about her feelings yesterday, this last set-back was the last straw. Jones has since responded on social media. @MieshaTate I don’t quit when things get tough for me, I get stronger. You just wait and see, maybe you’ll even find motivation in it. Sucks I lost you as a fan. Enjoy retirement sister

Joe Rogan comments on Jon Jones situation: I really hope he gets through this

Tom Taylor - February 28, 2018

Yesterday afternoon, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones met with the CSAC, where he was handed his punishment for his latest failed drug test. The commission pulled no punches, revoking his license, and fining him 40% of his UFC 214 fight purse. Because Jones is still awaiting a suspension from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), one can be quite confident that it’ll be a long time before we see him back in the cage. Given his status as one of MMA’s true greats, this is undeniably unfortunate.

BREAKING | Jon Jones Fined and His License Revoked at CSAC Hearing

Justin Golightly - February 27, 2018

This is what we’ve been waiting for since August of last year. Jon Jones sat in with the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) today to go through his case after his recent run-in with USADA following his UFC 214 fight with Daniel Cormier. The purpose of the hearing was to finally receive the word on the consequences Jon Jones will face. The CSAC are letting USADA handle the suspension, but they are revoking his license which could put him out of the sport for a year. As far as fines, the CSAC wants 40-percent of Jones’ $500K purse from UFC 214 plus an addition $5K. Reason for the revocation of a license in lieu of a suspension, is that after a year is up, Jon Jones will have to appear before the CSAC to show ‘evidence of rehabilitation’ for license approval. They estimate USADA will suspend him 18 months to 2 years on top of that.

Jon Jones Has a Crude Message For His Haters Who 'Will Never Understand'

Justin Golightly - February 16, 2018

Fresh on the heels of the news that Jon Jones will be appearing in front of the California State Athletic Commission for his hearing, Jon Jones has been releasing inspirational tweets and talking to fans on social media. There have even been a couple of short training videos showing that Jones fully intends on fighting soon. It’s that sort of confidence that has set him apart his entire career, and propelled him through his triumphs, as well as got him through his greatest tragedies. Today he had a different message though, for the people who continue to try and bury the man’s name. Let me talk to my haters. Blame my greatness on things you simply will never understand. Hard work. Passion. Suck one

BREAKING | We May Know the Fate of Jon Jones By the End of This Month

Justin Golightly - February 14, 2018

Since Summer of last year, we have watched this whole Jon Jones controversy unfold like some sort of O.J. Simpson court case. We all know every detail by now. After his finish of Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, it was all anyone could talk about it. Through all the samples, the passed lie detector test, we’ve all been plugged in. Teammates and even the UFC’s Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance, Jeff Novitsky weighed-in on what he thought of the whole situation. However, it’s all been just talk leading up to now, or more importantly, February 27th. First reported by Marc Raimondi of MMA Fighting as per the California State Athletic Commission agenda, former two-time UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will appear before the commission for them to decide what will be the severity of his fine and suspension. What follows will be his case to prove his innocence, which may last until the end of March.

Daniel Cormier Proud to Do Something Jon Jones Never Did Against Stipe Miocic

Justin Golightly - February 3, 2018

Back when Jon Jones finally came back and looked like the world-beater we all wanted him too, he was taken away from us nearly as soon as he arrived. He was able to finish Daniel Cormier and reclaim the title, then he called out Brock Lesnar. …But that fight never happened. Not only did a potential superfight go away, but so did Jones himself after a potential anti-doping violation that is still ongoing. A fight of that magnitude is now Daniel Cormier’s to carry. His fight later this year with Stipe Miocic is going to be historic and something no one — not even Jon Jones — can say they’ve accomplished. “It’s never been done before. The crazy thing when [Jon] Jones beat me, he asked to fight Brock Lesnar and he also said, ‘Hey, you guys can’t force me up to heavyweight, it’s one thing to fight a heavyweight, a guy that’s big. It’s another thing to go up and fight a guy that’s big, but also really, really good.’ So, he didn’t seem too stoked on it. I think it just shows the difference in mentality.”

VIDEO | Dana White Expects Gigantic Names to Fight in the UFC This Year

Justin Golightly - January 20, 2018

As the smoke settles from the announcement that Tony Ferguson will fight Khabib Nurmagomedov potentially for the UFC undisputed lightweight title, it turns out that this is only the beginning of what could be the biggest year for the organization of all time. That is, if half the things Dana White predicts will happen actually come to fruition. In am interview that went down right after the UFC 223 presser, White goes on to say he believes Conor McGregor, Georges St-Pierre, Jon Jones, Brock Lesnar and either Nick or Nate Diaz will fight in 2018. “I’m going to take the odds [that Conor McGregor will fight more than once in 2018]. I’m going to say yes. I’m going to make a lot of money, I’m going to say yes [that Georges St-Pierre fights again this year]. […] I’m going to take the odds again and say yes [that Brock Lesnar will return this year]. I’ll take the yes [that Jon Jones returns as well]. I’m going to go with yes [that one of the Diaz brothers fight again this year too].”

BREAKING | Jon Jones Independently Took a Lie Detector Test to Help Prove His Innocence

Justin Golightly - January 16, 2018

It’s 2018 and the other big question in MMA other than wondering just what Conor McGregor will decide to do all surrounds former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. The latest news to come out recently was the UFC’s Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky saying he believed Jones was innocent. Once again, the roller coaster goes up again as we learn that he took a lie detector test in an attempt to clear the air about his innocence and passed it. “Last month, Jones took a polygraph test in hopes of proving he is telling the truth when he states he never knowingly took Turinabol, an anabolic steroid, or any other performance-enhancing substance prior to his UFC 214 fight against Daniel Cormier in Anaheim, Calif. Jones passed the test, according to UFC sources. The test was conducted by the PGP Polygraph & Interviewing Service in Albuquerque, N.M. on Dec. 7, sources say. Neither the UFC nor the United States Anti-Doping Agency asked Jones to take the test.” – via a report by MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani.

VIDEO | Jeff Novitzky Thinks Jon Jones May Be Innocent

Justin Golightly - January 3, 2018

The plot thickens once again. Since the Summer of 2017, we’ve been going up and down in the crazy roller coaster of Jon Jones’ possible anti-doping violation. It’s gone every which way you could think of through his A sample and B sample news, coaches coming to his aid, as well as the potential consequences he’d be facing and some insane rumors. Things have been relatively quiet for awhile, but just recently the UFC’s vice president of athlete health and performance, Jeff Novitzky has been notified of some meetings that have gone well. The big kicker though is that he doesn’t believe the former UFC light heavyweight champion took this drug intentionally. “Right up front, I’ve said this awhile now, it would not make a lot of sense for an individual, a UFC athlete that knew, especially a champion or contender like Jon Jones, that knew ‘Hey, I’m tested quite regularly in the program,’ would not make a lot of sense that [Turinabol] would be your drug of choice if you were intentionally trying to cheat. I think it’s come out after the fact that USADA did another test on Jon a month or two or a couple of months after his positive test and he was negative during that test.”

Joe Rogan questions if Jon Jones' poor decisions outside the Octagon could be associated with brain injury

Russell Ess - December 28, 2017

Jon Jones is one of the most talented athletes that we have ever seen in the Octagon. However, Jones has shown that his biggest adversary has always been himself with some of his actions done throughout his career. The former UFC light heavyweight champion is currently going through the due process with USADA and the California State Athletic Commission after testing positive for the steroid Turinabol following his second fight with Daniel Cormier at UFC 214.

Russell Ess - December 21, 2017

The MMA community has yet to get any new substantial information regarding Jon Jones’ positive steroid test following his fight with Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, which took place in July. Jones originally had a hearing date set for December 12 but was granted a continuance in November, which pushed his hearing date back to February 2018. UFC commentator Joe Rogan and fellow martial artist Eddie Bravo were talking on the JRE podcast about the latest with Jones and the status of his hearing and Rogan opened up on some of the rumors that he has been hearing.

VIDEO | Steroids or Not, Alexander Gustafsson Wants to Fight 'Real Champion' Jon Jones

Justin Golightly - December 12, 2017

As Volkan Oezdemir prepares for his title shot against Daniel Cormier, Alexander Gustafsson has just had a successful surgery and has returned to training. When he comes back, he wants another chance at UFC light heavyweight gold against whoever wins, but there is one thing he wants even more. Back at UFC 165, Gustafsson put on a Fight of the Night performance against Jon Jones, putting the GOAT candidate in more danger than he’s ever faced in his career. Regardless of what Jones was on or wasn’t on, Gustafsson wants to run it back again with Jones to find out who is better once and for all. “…A fight is a fight, right?” – Gustafsson after Helwani asked if he still wants to fight Jon Jones even if he’s (allegedly) on PEDs. #TheMMAHour pic.twitter.com/UmA4jfYLzX

According to Dana White, there were plans for Conor McGregor to fight on the last pay-per-view card of the year at UFC 219. However, McGregor’s incident in the Bellator cage that brought a lot of attention to the UFC’s main competitor had him nixed from the event for shoving the referee and slapping a Bellator staff member. Now, rumors are swirling around that “The Notorious” punched a man in a bar in Crumlin, Ireland. Reports have been circulating in Irish media that the man McGregor hit has ties to the mob in Ireland.

Jon Jones Hearing for Failed Drug Test Rescheduled

Adam Conklin - November 21, 2017

For what feels like the past decade, Jon Jones has been making headlines for basically everything in the world of MMA. From car accidents to drug tests and even a ‘successful’ return to former glory (albeit a brief return) Jones doesn’t seem to have to try hard to be the main topic of conversation. That conversation will be prolonged a bit more though as Jones’ upcoming hearing regarding a failed UFC 214 drug test has been moved to undetermined day in February of next year. The hearing was initially scheduled for December 12th according to a report by MMAFighting.
