Michael Chiesa was riding a nice little three-fight win streak until he ran into Kevin Lee, but now he’s back on the journey to restore his standing in the division and get back in that win column. He’ll be fighting former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis at the stacked UFC 223 card. Not only is he eager to get back in the cage, but he’s also relieved that Conor McGregor will be stripped to leave room for other fighters like himself to eventually get a title shot. “The biggest thing we need, is we need movement. The 155-pound division has been log-jammed so many times. When Anthony was champion he had some injuries that held him out for a while, you know, so the division got jammed up. And then we had some movement, and then Conor [McGregor] won the title and we’re jammed up again, and you know, you just gotta keep the wheels in motion. It’s just good to see. Conor’s a two-time champion, but he can’t just sit and hold the belt and keep us all waiting. You know, there’s a lot of tough guys jockeying for their position to be number one, and you only have so much time in this sport, so you can’t let one guy rob a bunch of us of our opportunities to fight for the belt.”

UFC lightweight contender Kevin Lee is currently booked for a dangerous test opposite Edson Barboza at UFC Fight Night 12 on April 21. Though this bout is at the forefront of his focus at the moment, Lee also believes he’ll be fighting current UFC lightweight champ and MMA superstar Conor McGregor by the end of the year. “That fight happens at the end of the year, me and Conor,” Lee said at a UFC 222 media scrum, (h/t BloodyElbow). “I think that’s the fight that everybody’s been looking forward to, and is right there within striking distance.”

At present, it’s not known what the future holds for former UFC welterweight and middleweight champ Georges St-Pierre. He might return to the Octagon, or he might not. If St-Pierre does return to the Octagon, one of the most compelling options for him as far as opponents go would be current UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. At least, that’s what St-Pierre’s head coach Firas Zahabi believes.

For every jab Conor McGregor has had recently, the UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway has had a counter. This has been going on for months and seems to have no stopping point in sight. Giving his savvy Twitter fingers a rest, Holloway recently spoke at length about the social media feud and compares Conor McGregor to Uncle Rico from early 2000’s cult hit ‘Napoleon Dynamite’. That is, he’s living in the past. “[Conor McGregor]’s been throwing the little jabs here and there. It’s like I said, retired fighters like talking about the past. They’re like your uncle when you’re at the barbecue and your uncle’s like, ‘Come here, boy, remember back in my day I could throw this pigskin over the mountain.’ That’s what they do. They talk about the past. They ain’t got nothing to look forward [to], so they talk about their past. That’s what the man’s doing. They can talk about the past all they want.”

Thanks to Conor McGregor, in part due to Frankie Edgar’s manager Ali Abdel-Aziz, the 165 division has been talked about more recently than it has in the last couple of years. When it was leaked he wanted a 165-pound title during the UFC 222 late replacement back-and-forth, few really believed it. However, Artem Lobov and later Dana White confirmed McGregor was indeed in talks to step up and fight Edgar. Now Diego Sanchez has brought everything back in discussion and has the monumental fight he wants to debut the division. “Conor McGregor, come on brother. We need the 165-pound weight class. You have the power with UFC and Dana White to make it happen. First three division champion fight and winner goes down as the real greatest of all time. The sport needs this weight class. Conor McGregor goes by many names: The Notorious, Mystic Mac, Champ Champ™, and now he can truly call himself The Burger King. He’s flying high (and private) after his huge ad with the food giant, continuing to slay the game as he counts cash on the sidelines. Keeping his mind on money and money on his mind, McGregor was quick to congratulate Jay Z after it was reported by Forbes that the magnate overtook Diddy in profits. He was even quicker to point out he is set to do the same to Floyd Mayweather and Cristiano Ronaldo. “Making deals and taking deals. Kings recognize Kings. Congrats to Jay Z on his number one takeover from Diddy in the highest paid Forbes list. What a takeover. Diddy hasn’t been number two in so long. Until now. Zoom into that two-tone with the powder blue on my wrist, mate. You might see first place again. I am also really interested to see this year’s Forbes highest paid athletes list. I have now surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo as I told him I would in 2016.”

The social media war continues between former enemies turned UFC champions, Max Holloway and Conor McGregor. There have been slight back and forths between the two since Holloway first won the featherweight title at UFC 212 by defeating Jose Aldo via third round TKO. But it has begun to heat up and get dare I say…a little spicy…

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor – who is expected to be stripped of his title when the cage door closes on Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 – has been uncharacteristically active on Twitter lately, engaging with many of his UFC rivals. One of his latest targets was reigning UFC featherweight champ Max Holloway, who he defeated by decision back in 2013. McGregor’s jab at Holloway occurred after the featherweight champ attempted to console Frankie Edgar on Twitter.

The latest fighter to be targeted by McGregor on Twitter is interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson, who will battle Khabib Nurmagomedov for McGregor’s vacated belt at UFC 223 on April 7.

It appears that we have our concrete answer when it comes to whether or not Conor McGregor will be keeping his UFC lightweight championship. As most know by now, at UFC 223 next month, on April 7, Tony Ferguson will be taking on Khabib Nurmagomedov for Ferguson’s interim title. Although…that is no longer the case as UFC President, Dana White told ESPN today that the fight will be over the undisputed title come fight time as BJPenn.com’s own Chris Taylor first confirmed back in January:

Conor McGregor supposedly was not only going to step in to fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222, but it was allegedly going to be for a brand new 165-pound title on top of that. The info about the title was leaked out by Edgar’s manager himself, although he disputes that they were ever offered a fight. McGregor teammate Artem Lobov recently confirmed that the fight and belt was a go. In response, Max Holloway let it leak that he too was in talks to fight for a new belt. “One more update Ariel Helwani. After I was pulled from UFC 222, I offered to amputate my leg and fight for a 115lb belt against Demetrious Johnson. It was very, very close. Plans were in place. Frankie Edgar has been pretty quiet since Conor McGregor came out with the news that he offered to fight the former lightweight champion at UFC 222. It’s now been confirmed by two sources that this fight was going to be for the 165-pound title, however Edgar still says he was never approached about it. It doesn’t matter though, he says he’d fight McGregor at any weight if he was actually offered the fight. “I woke up from a nap and I saw [news about Conor McGregor saying he was supposed to step in to fight me at UFC 222] it on Twitter. That’s the first I heard of it. I mean, come on, there is no 165-pound belt. You know what I’m saying? I want to fight on the moon. You know what I mean? Come on. [Conor McGregor] doesn’t want to defend his own belt. What, he wants to fight me? I mean, hey, that’d be great. That’d be great for me. Let’s be real. I’m not scared to fight anybody. Come on, I’ve been doing too long to be scared to fight anybody. I mean, if anything, that would be very good for me, to fight Conor McGregor.

Last week, there was a tsunami that crashed through MMA media, all caused by a little blurb that Conor McGregor said in which most people didn’t even believe to be true. The word was that he offered to step in to fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222. While all sites started rushing to get out their news, Edgar’s manager Ali Abdel-Aziz and coach Mark Henry were loading up more material. Aziz brought up an alleged request by McGregor for a new 165 title, which Artem Lobov seemed to just confirm. “[We were] very close [to going to UFC 222 to fight Frankie Edgar for 165-pound ittle]. Very, very close. It was real, 100-percent. Conor was ready to go, that was it, we were gathering the troops already, we were ready to go. Were planning what we were going to do; we were just going to fly out to Vegas straightaway to do this short little camp.”

After a wild firestorm created by Conor McGregor revealing that he offered to step in to fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222, fans were baffled and Edgar’s coach and manager were pissed off to say the least. After refuting McGregor’s claims, Edgar’s manager Ali Abdel-Aziz said he requested a new division be created: The 165-pound division. This isn’t the first time the weight class has been talked about. Super lightweight interests more than just the Champ Champ™ supposedly looking for a third title, there’s a whole potential top five who are waiting for it to be formed. Nothing like a Conor McGregor post to wreak havoc on a fight week. He said he was going to step in and fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222, then the dominoes fell and continue to fall. In the midst of this wild back-and-forth between Conor McGregor and Frankie Edgar’s camp, information is coming out from many different places and the truth probably rests somewhere in the middle of this chaos. In between the rants of Edgar’s manager in the media, he said something very interesting in a reply to Ariel Helwani. That McGregor requested a 165-pound title. When conor called the ufc he asked them create a 165lb belt. He thinks @danawhite was born yesterday. This is fact. Waiting for response Mr. Helwani. #BeefIsReal

The fire just keeps roaring and spreading. Conor McGregor lit the MMA world ablaze by saying he was going to step in to fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222. Immediately, Edgar’s manager Ali Abdel-Aziz put the Irishman on blast on social media and to ESPN. Now, Edgar’s coach Mark Henry took to Instagram to write a lengthy post calling Conor McGregor’s bluff. While partly complimentary, Henry takes serious issue with McGregor’s character. “When you bring up Frankie Edgar’s name, that’s the perfect picture for you Conor McGregor. You ducked him three times in the past, Edgar and his manager Ali Abdel-Aziz asked for Conor’s name specifically when Max went down, but we knew you only take stylistically what is a good match for you and you ducked him three times already. It’s bad enough you post crappy posts putting people down when you have never defended a title cut lines to titles and 90-percent of the time fight people in your comfort zone. I agree Conor is an amazing, amazing fighter and has transcended the game with his accent, personality, wit, incredible fighting style, power, intelligence and don’t forget trashing people some of the best stand-up I’ve ever seen in MMA, which beat a great and one of my own guys. I really thought he had a chance first two rounds to beat [Floyd] Mayweather.”

Earlier today, Conor McGregor served an appetizer to those that are eagerly awaiting his return to the Octagon. The self-proclaimed Champ Champ™ came out of nowhere and went on record saying that he actually offered to step up and wipe out the ‘final featherweight’ Frankie Edgar in place of Max Holloway at UFC 222. According to him, the UFC wasn’t able to ‘generate the money’ to put it together. Before the steam even cleared even cleared from that heat, Edgar’s manager Ali Abdel-Aziz was already speaking out about the claim. On McGregor’s claim he offered to fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222, Edgar’s manager @AliAbdelaziz00 tells me, “He’s full a s—. He’s a liar. He should have fought Frankie two years ago.”
