Cody Garbrandt’s time atop the UFC bantamweight mountain was brief. He won the title with a December, 2016 decision defeat of Dominick Cruz, and lost it in his first defense, succumbing to second-round punches from his arch rival TJ Dillashaw in November of 2017. Despite the fact that Garbrandt never successfully defended the title, he was given an immediate rematch with Dillashaw, which headlined UFC 227 last Saturday night. Dillashaw believes Garbrandt got this rare opportunity because the UFC is “hard for” the former champion.

Cody Garbrandt, who came up short to TJ Dillashaw in the UFC 227 main event, was assigned to the same locker room as UFC 227 undercard fighter Marlon Vera, who has recently done a bit of training with Dillashaw. When the both wound up in that locker room at the same time, Garbrandt and his team essentially kicked Vera out, worrying perhaps that he might be spying for Dillashaw. As you can probably imagine, this did not go over well with Vera, who was just hoping to do some training of his own.

Last night, in the main event of the action-packed UFC 227 card, former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt attempted to reclaim the title from the main he lost it to, TJ Dillashaw. Unfortunately for Garbrandt and his legions of fans, this fight did not go as planned, as he was put down by a Dillashaw punch and finished with volley of followup strikes in the first frame. With this outcome, Garbrandt is now 0-2 opposite the current champion, with both of those losses coming by way of knockout. To say he’s in a tough spot would be an understatement.

Last night, in the main event of UFC 227, UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw defended his title against the very man he won it from, former UFC bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt. Just as he did in their first fight, which co-headlined UFC 217 in November, Dillashaw won this fight by knockout — but this time he did it even faster. Now 0-2 against the current champion, with both losses coming by way of knockout, the future looks nebulous for Garbrandt. Although he remains an incredibly dangerous challenge for most fighters, he will have to move mountains in order to earn another title shot as long as Dillashaw is king.

The former teammates turned bitter rivals, Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw first met at November’s UFC 217 event in New York. After being dropped in the first-round, Dillashaw would storm back to earn an impressive knockout victory in round two.

Last week, UFC featherweight champ Max Holloway was forced out of his UFC 222 title fight with Frankie Edgar, leaving the card without a main event. From there, the UFC began a desperate scramble to find a suitable replacement fight. One of the options was a rematch between bantamweight champ TJ Dillashaw and former champ Cody Garbrandt, who fought back in November, in a fight that saw Dillashaw brave an early scare to win by knockout. While this potential rematch generated plenty of buzz, Dillashaw was pretty quick to express his complete disinterest in it. He did just beat Garbrandt, after all, and with a newborn son at home, and grand plans for a superfight with flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson in the works for July, the timing doesn’t make a lot of sense for him.
