UFC president Dana White justified creating an interim heavyweight title for UFC 265’s main event between Ciryl Gane and Derrick Lewis. The main event of August’s UFC 265 pay-per-view was expected to feature UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou vs. Lewis for the undisputed title. However, Ngannou was not ready to go on August 7 in Houston, Texas, and with Houston native Lewis still on the card, White and the UFC went ahead and booked Gane for an interim title fight, despite the fact Ngannou just beat former champion Stipe Miocic back in March.

Gane defeated Volkov via unanimous decision at UFC Vegas 30 last weekend to improve to 9-0 in MMA and 6-0 in the UFC alone. The Frenchman said after the fight that he wanted to fight UFC heavyweight Francis Ngannou for the belt next, but while that won’t happen, Gane was given quite the consolation prize. Instead of Ngannou fighting Derrick Lewis at UFC 265, Gane will now fight Lewis for the interim heavyweight title on August 7.

UFC heavyweight contender Ciryl Gane called Jon Jones the GOAT, and says he is interested in a future heavyweight fight with “Bones.” Gane defeated Alexander Volkov via unanimous decision last weekend to improve to 9-0 in MMA and 6-0 overall in the UFC. The win was so impressive to UFC president Dana White and the promotion’s top executives that Gane was given an interim title shot against Derrick Lewis at UFC 265 this summer with Francis Ngannou out. The Gane vs. Lewis winner will likely be in line to face Ngannou sometime later this year for the undisputed title. Of course, there’s one other factor in the heavyweight equation, and that’s Jones.

Gane and Volkov stood in the center of the Octagon and banged it out for 25 minutes in what was a technical striking battle between the two big men. Although Volkov had his moments, it was mostly Gane who was in control of the fight from the start of it until the end, and he was awarded a unanimous decision on the judges’ scorecards following the match. The Octagon remained in Nevada for today’s UFC Vegas 30 event, a 13-bout fight card headlined by heavyweights Ciryl Gane and Alexander Volkov. The highly anticipated heavyweight main event went the full twenty-five minutes. During which time Ciryl Gane was able to get the better of Alexander Volkov for the majority of the five-round main event. The Frenchman showcased his elite level striking throughout the contest and ultimately was rewarded with a unanimous decision victory from the judges in attendance.
