REPORT | Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermall Charlo expected for May 4th in Las Vegas

By Josh Evanoff - February 13, 2024

It appears that Canelo Alvarez and Jermall Charlo will meet in the boxing ring later this year.

The Mexican superstar has been out of the ring since a unanimous decision victory over Jermell Charlo last September. The victory was Canelo Alvarez’s third in a row, previously defeating John Ryder and Gennadiy Golovkin. Months on from the super middleweight champion’s latest win, he will reportedly fight his last opponent’s brother, Jermall Charlo.

‘Hitman’ was first in discussions to fight Canelo Alvarez last September. However, the nod instead went to Jermall Charlo’s brother, Jermell. As a result, the middleweight instead booked a fight with Jose Benavidez Jr. in November. Charlo dominated the bout across 12 rounds in order to earn his first victory since 2021.

That win was seemingly enough to grant Jermall Charlo a crack at Canelo Alvarez. According to a report from Ring Magazine, the Mexican superstar will defend his super-middleweight titles on May 4th in Las Vegas. The report didn’t specify what arena Alvarez would compete at, but the champion did confirm the date of his return was accurate earlier today in an interview with TV Azteca.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermall Charlo reportedly slated for May 4th in Las Vegas

With this news, it seems that Canelo Alvarez’s next fight is set. It’s worth noting that there were other boxers reportedly in the running, including the likes of David Benavidez, Jaime Munguia, and Terence Crawford. Instead, it will be Jermall Charlo who gets the chance to avenge his loss to his brother last September.

However, the aforementioned ‘Bud’ is still in the running to face Canelo Alvarez later this year. Beyond the report about the Mexican boxer facing Jermall Charlo, he was also linked to a future fight with Terence Crawford. However, that bout is instead expected for September.

Crawford previously called out Alvarez following a win over Errol Spence Jr. last July. However, with his rematch with ‘The Truth’ still up in the air, the super-middleweight champion has seemingly decided to go in a different direction. If the bout with Crawford gets made later this year, it would allow ‘Bud’ the chance to make history as the first ever undisputed three-weight world champion.
