Tom Taylor - June 6, 2017

The verdict is in. Former UFC and Bellator fighter War Machine – born Jonathan Koppenhaver – will get 36 years to life for his hideous attack on his ex-girlfriend Christy Mack and her boyfriend Corey Thomas. The former fighter will be eligible for parole after 36 years. He will be 71 years old by the time this parole eligibility arrives. This sentencing follows the March crescendo of War Machine’s long and arduous trial, during which many horrifying details of his attack on Mack and Thomas came to light. In the end, he was found guilty on a whopping 29 of the 34 charges levied against him, including such grim offences as sexual assault, battery and kidnapping. The most severe charges he faced – a pair of attempted murder charges – resulted in a hung jury, meaning the jury was unable to agree on a guilty or not guilty verdict.

TJ Dillashaw on Demetrious Johnson outcry: it all comes down to him being scared of me beating him

Tom Taylor - June 6, 2017

Yesterday morning, dominant UFC flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson made waves by releasing a lengthy, anti-UFC statement, blasting the organization and its head-honcho Dana White for bullying him, and for trying to force him into a fight with former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw (read that statement here). Now a day removed from Johnson’s passionate address, Dillashaw has issued a response. As a member of the Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Association, which strives to improve treatment of fighters, one might expect Dillashaw to sympathize with Johnson. Apparently, however, the former bantamweight champion doesn’t have much sympathy to give.

This then prompted a response on Twitter from Jones, which in turn influenced Gustafsson to fire back. Tom Taylor - June 5, 2017

On Saturday night, in the co-main event of UFC 212, we watched Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz – the strawweight division’s number one and two ranked fighters – collide in what looked like it could be a number-one contender fight. From the early vantage point, this one seemed to have all the makings of a competitive, back and forth scrap. In the end, however, it was not. Instead, Gadelha quickly grounded the fight, at which point she took her Polish foe’s back, locked up the rear-naked choke, and coaxed out the tap for the win. It all went down in just over three minutes. In the wake of this lopsided win over the former title challenger Kowalkiewicz, the streaking Gadelha took to social media to issue a classy statement, sharing her respect for Kowalkiewicz and thanking her for taking the fight.

Ray Borg worries a flyweight TJ Dillashaw will be just like Conor McGregor

Tom Taylor - June 4, 2017

The next crack at UFC flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson seems like it will go to one of two men. The first of these two men is flyweight contender Ray Borg. The other is former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, who has said repeatedly that he’s willing to undertake the cut to flyweight to take on the dominant Mighty Mouse. According to Borg, however, Dillashaw’s winning the flyweight title could be disastrous for the division. The flyweight contender worries that the bantamweight champ may win gold from Mighty Mouse, then return to bantamweight, effectively holding the flyweight title hostage as he does.

Cub Swanson demands rematch with Max Holloway, promises he'll be victorious

Tom Taylor - June 4, 2017

Last night, in the main event of UFC 212, streaking Hawaiian star Max Holloway sent a shockwave through the UFC featherweight division by defeating once-dominant featherweight king Jose Aldo with third-round strikes. With this impressive win, Holloway begins what could well be a very dominant reign as UFC featherweight champion. Though nothing is certain just yet, the next featherweight title shot seems like it belongs to former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. While Edgar failed twice to capture gold against Aldo, he is currently on an impressive two-fight streak, having recently defeated game foes in Jeremy Stephens and Yair Rodriguez. His receiving a shot at Holloway would not be a hard sell.

UFC commentator Joe Rogan, who was not on duty for UFC 212, believes Holloway’s win over Aldo – when combined with the fact that McGregor has beat both him and Aldo – makes McGregor the greatest featherweight of all time. Rogan made this claim on the latest edition of his podcast, which aired during the UFC 212 broadcast.
