This weekend, in the main event of UFC Vancouver, Justin Gaethje will step into the Octagon with a fellow fan-favorite in Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. If Gaethje is able to defeat Cerrone, who he considers a friend, he believes he’ll be right near the summit of the lightweight mountain, and will only accept a few fights thereafter. One, he says, is a fight against the winner of an expected but yet unscheduled title fight between divisional champ Khabib Nurmagomedov and top contender Tony Ferguson. The other is a fight with a man he’s become increasingly hostile toward; former two-division champion Conor McGregor.

Donald Cerrone has some history with his UFC Vancouver foe Justin Gaethje. Cerrone will be facing Gaethje in the main event of UFC Vancouver on Saturday, September 14. Neither fighter will hold back when the cage door closes, yet Cerrone spoke fondly of his opponent in an interview with James Lynch.

Conor McGregor recently claimed that, had he not injured his hand, he could have ended up in the Octagon with Justin Gaethje this summer. “I believe it was leaning towards Justin Gaethje at that time,” McGregor told ESPN last week.

Conor McGregor has not fought since UFC 229 when he lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov, but he was close to fighting in July at UFC 240. The Irishman was eager to return to the Octagon and revealed to Ariel Helwani in an interview that he was going to fight Justin Gaethje at that event. However, UFC 240 would have taken place in Madison Square Garden, not in Edmonton as it did. But, a broken hand forced Conor McGregor out of that possible fight.

One option that is still available, however, is former World Series of Fighting lightweight king Justin Gaethje. While a the idea of a McGregor vs. Justin Gaethje fight is likely to excite many fans, Gaethje’s manager Ali Abdelaziz does not believe the fight would be competitive. He believes his client would dominate the Irishman, and used all kinds of creative metaphors to describe the color of McGregor’s flesh after a potential meeting with Gaethje.

Couple that with a criminally underrated ground game, and you have the recipe for big problems for reigning UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. During an appearance on The MMA Hour, Gaethje implied that he would be the “toughest out” for Nurmagomedov out of all the other title contenders, including Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier and Tony Ferguson.

Perhaps the most exciting of them all regardless of division is ‘The Highlight,’ Justin Gaethje. With only five fights in the UFC to this point, the former World Series of Fighting champion has gone 3-2 and earned a performance bonus in each of those outings. Thus giving him six in total as his debut against Michael Johnson earned fight and performance of the night honors. His first three bouts were all nominated as a fight of the year candidate as well.

Speaking to the media backstage, the former World Series of Fighting lightweight champion divulged that he’s got his eyes on two potential opponents in particular: Tony Ferguson and Conor McGregor.
