Elias Theodorou discusses release from UFC

Tom Taylor - June 18, 2019

Despite an 8-3 promotional record against solid competition, Canadian middleweight Elias Theodorou was recently released by the UFC. The move, though widely derided by fans, has not left Theodorou with any ill will toward the UFC. “I have no ill will toward the UFC,” Theodorou told MMA Junkie. “I don’t think being upset about it does anyone good. Especially myself. I don’t want to burn any bridges, but I also want to look at it in the positive aspects where I’m happy and healthy, and I’ve been successful in 20 of my professional times.”

Two weeks ago, the UFC made a surprising decision to release ranked middleweight Elias Theodorou and ranked heavyweight Justin Willis. Both fighters had success inside the Octagon but were coming off of lackluster losses. This week, UFC President, Dana White explained why the Las Vegas-based promotion decided to release the two fighters.

Elias Theodorou comments on UFC release

Tom Taylor - May 30, 2019

Canadian middleweight Elias Theodorou is among the latest crop of fighters to be released from the UFC roster. Given the fact that he was previously ranked in the division’s top-15, and that he boasts a solid 8-3 UFC record, this news came as a bit of a surprise. Speaking on his Twitter account on Wednesday, Theodorou himself shared a few quick thoughts on this surprising twist of fate.

Joe Rogan says Elias Theodorou release 'doesn't make any sense'

Cole Shelton - May 29, 2019

When the UFC released four fighters last week, the most surprising name was Canadian and 15th-ranked middleweight, Elias Theodorou, and UFC commentator Joe Rogan agrees. The Canadian was 3-1 in his last four, and 8-3 in his entire time in the UFC, along with winning a season of The Ultimate Fighter. However, his style was not the most entertaining one, as evident by him getting booed in his last fight against Derek Brunson. As well, he had not finished or been finished in a fight since March of 2015, a stretch of eight-straight fights.

EXCLUSIVE | Elias Theodorou seeks to strike cannabis from USADA banned substance list

Cole Shelton - January 21, 2019

Elias Theodorou’s toughest fight is not against any UFC fighter. Rather, it is taking on the United States Anti-Doping Agency to get a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) for medical cannabis which has been prescribed by his doctor. Although cannabis is legalized in Canada where Theodorou lives, it doesn’t matter to USADA.

After close UFC 231 loss to Elias Theodorou, Eryk Anders says he's 'gonna keep it in America' for now

Tom Taylor - December 10, 2018

Last Saturday night, on the undercard of UFC 231 in Toronto, Eryk Anders got his long-awaited fight with Canada’s Elias Theodorou. While Anders had Theodorou visibly hurt in the second round — perhaps even enough to justify a 10-8 score — Theodorou was ultimately awarded a split decision win on the basis of his success his success in the first and third frames. While Eryk Anders has been classy in the wake of this loss, he recently announced his intention to fight in America for his next few fights, where he’s less likely to face any sort of judging bias.

EXCLUSIVE | Eryk Anders speaks out after Carlos Junior vs. Theodorou fight is scratched from UFC 231

Cole Shelton - September 14, 2018

One of the big headlines in the MMA world this morning was that Antonio Carlos Junior is out of his UFC 231 matchup against Elias Theodorou. The first replacement matchup that comes to mind with Carlos Junior on the bench is Eryk Anders vs. Theodorou, given that Anders called out Theodorou after his UFC Fight Night 135 knockout win over Tim Williams. Why Anders wants to fight Theodorou so badly is for one reason and one reason only.

Antonio Carlos Junior out of UFC 231 fight against Elias Theodorou

Cole Shelton - September 14, 2018

Antonio Carlos Junior and Elias Theodorou were supposed to fight on Sept. 22 in Brazil, but Carlos Junior had to pull out due to injury. However, the fight was quickly rescheduled for UFC 231 on December 8, this time in Theodorou’s hometown of Toronto. Even with the fight being pushed back almost four months it still wasn’t enough time for Carlos Junior. The injury he sustained was more severe than he originally thought as he tweeted at Theodorou that he will be out of their matchup on Dec. 8 for UFC 231.

Elias Theodorou is creating a "ring boy" calendar

Tom Taylor - May 27, 2018

Elias Theodorou, who picked up a nice decision win over Trevor Smith during the prelims of Sunday’s UFC Liverpool card, has recently been moonlighting as a “ring boy” for women’s MMA promotion Invicta Fighting Championship. Essentially, Theodorou’s gig with Invicta sees him fulfill the same role as the “ring girls” of Bellator or the UFC. Shortly after his big win in Liverpool, Theodorou announced that he’ll soon be giving other male fighters a chance to try their hands as ring boys — in a sense.

Drake Riggs - February 19, 2018

When you thought you had finally seen it all in MMA, Canadian UFC star, Elias Theodorou goes and makes what many have joked about over the years a reality. He confirmed today when speaking on the MMA Hour that he will be the first ever ring-boy for a major promotion when he will be in action at Invicta FC 28 on March 24. Invicta FC has been the premier all-female MMA organization since it’s birth back in 2012. Now what a better time for them to grab their first ring-boy and for it to be the man with a Pert shampoo sponsorship, Elias Theodorou?

VIDEO | Business Savvy Elias Theodorou is Fine With Nate Diaz vs Tyron Woodley

Justin Golightly - November 16, 2017

Elias Theodorou is living the gimmick. The ‘Mane Event’ has got deals with Pert Plus and now even Mattel, just a couple of ways he’s making money outside the cage to eventually gain leverage inside of it. He’s part of a new era of fighters that have changed with the sport, forecast its path, and prepared for it. None of us however, were prepared for the news that a fight between Tyron Woodley and Nate Diaz would be in the works. It was met drastically different reactions that include both extremes, but Theodorou is completely fine with it. Not only that, but explains why it makes business-sense. “What do rankings mean? We potentially have [Tyron] Woodley fighting Nate Diaz. I have a TV show and a movie in the works. Once my face in on a movie, they’ll put me wherever I demand. I have more bigger plans than this. People are thinking too [narrow-minded] — Gone are the days of, ‘I’ll fight anyone, anywhere, blah blah blah.’ […] Sport Entertainment. Plain and simple. That’s what it is and all the power to them. I hope Woodley and Nate make as much money possible. Again, it’s for what it is. I’m not even criticizing the UFC for doing it.  They have a $100 million a year in interest that they have to pay for $4 billion – $4.2 billion entity that they bought and they got to do what they got to do.”
