“[Georges St-Pierre is] back in training as usual.” Tristar head coach Firas Zahabi told MMA Betz. “Hopefully, he’ll get back in the game in 2019… So keep an eye out for that.

“As of what I understand right now, there is no 165 [pound division]. It’s a ‘maybe’ from what I understand. It’s a rumor I should say, and if that happens I think it could be very interesting for Georges. I’m hoping that rumor is true.

“I think the best matchup would be, for sure, Khabib [Nurmagomedov].” Zahabi continued. “If they were to create a 165-pound division, I think it would make a lot of sense to have Georges St-Pierre and Khabib be the first ones to fight for that title.”

It’s no secret that Georges St-Pierre is one of, if not the greatest fighter of all time in MMA. However, he would like to continue adding to his legacy if possible.

Seemingly the only fight that he’s interested in at this stage would be a super fight with the unbeaten lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov.

As Georges St-Pierre has openly said that’s a fight he would be interested since Nurmagomedov’s winning of the title in April 2018, a bout between the two has reportedly been in the works since late October.

With St-Pierre back to training and his longtime coach Firas Zahabi being on the same wavelength, it makes one wonder if this could be a fight we could see depending on what happens with Nurmagomedov in the near future.

However, following the recent interview, MMA Team Dagestan had the following to say.

“Guys as far as I know something has changed a little)
In my opinion GSP will have to wait for the beginning of autumn..” the tweet read.

Nurmagomedov still awaits to find out what his suspension and fine will be from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for his post-fight antics at UFC 229.

Meanwhile, Zahabi shared what he thinks the difference makers would be in the fight.

“That would be a very competitive fight, you know?” Zahabi said. “Both are flawless fighters. They’ve been flawless over the years. I just think that Georges’ striking is going to be a little bit sharper and his surprise takedowns will be surprising.”
