Former UFC lightweight kingpin Benson Henderson has been competing under the Bellator MMA banner throughout 2016. In April, ‘Smooth’ made his Bellator MMA debut as he stepped into the cage as a welterweight to fight Andrey Koreshkov for the Bellator welterweight championship. Unfortunately for the former UFC champ, he dropped a unanimous decision to Koreshkov. In his second Bellator MMA appearance, Henderson picked up a TKO win over former Bellator champion Patricio Freire in a lightweight title eliminator. Unfortunately for Henderson, in his next fight, which took place in November, he dropped a split decision to Michael Chandler in what many believed to be a ‘Fight of the Year’ performance.

While Conor McGregor is undoubtably one of the most dominant UFC champions in the sport right now, the possibility of the Irish superstar making the jump to boxing has fight fans split down the middle in regards to how they feel the two-weight champ would fair in the boxing ring. While some believe that McGregor’s precision striking, combined with the power in his left hand, would make for a successful transition to the boxing ring, others believe that regardless of his boxing abilities in MMA, McGregor doesn’t stand a chance against top ranked boxers, especially Floyd Mayweather.

Tonight in Las Vegas, Nevada, UFC flyweight champion and pound for pound kingpin Demetrious Johnson will step into the Octagon as he looks to defend his flyweight championship for the ninth time when he faces the winner of ‘The Ultimate Fighter: Tournament of Champions’, Tim Elliot. While Johnson has all but cleaned out the UFC’s flyweight division, in an interview this week, he explained that a move to bantamweight may not be in his future. In addition, despite his dominance, many fans feel as though Johnson doesn’t get the respect he deserves inside the Octagon.

Tito Ortiz reveals fight with Chael Sonnen will be his last

While Tito Ortiz is currently gearing up for his Bellator 170 scrap with Chael Sonnen on January 21st, Ortiz has kept the fact that the fight will be his last under wraps, until now. Earlier this year, Sonnen celebrated the end of his two year suspension handed down by the NSAC. Following the end of his suspension, it didn’t take long for Sonnen to announce that he was ending his retirement, and had signed an exclusive multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA. In addition, it didn’t take long for Sonnen to call out former UFC champion Tito Ortiz for a fight, which was eventually booked for January 21st in Inglewood California.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is currently serving a suspension for a failed random out-of-competition drug test back in June, which forced him out of his UFC 200 headlining scrap with Daniel Cormier just 48 hours before fight night. Jones maintained his innocence throughout USADA’s appeal process, and it was ultimately determined that the failed drug test was the result of a tainted supplement, which resulted in USADA handing the former champ a one year suspension retroactive to July, meaning Jones will be eligible to compete again on July 7th of 2017.

Nelson ultimately picked up a second round KO win over Silva, however it was the actions which occurred after the KO which resulted in the fight making headlines. After Silva was out cold on the canvas, Nelson believed that referee Big John McCarthy was slow on stopping the fight, and allowed Silva to take unnecessary blows after being KOd. Nelson promptly gave McCarthy the finger before then delivering a swift kick to McCarthy’s rear end while he was tending to Silva.

Reigning & defending Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg has been campaigning for the UFC to create a women’s featherweight division for quite some time now. Cyborg made her UFC debut earlier this year at UFC 198 when she stepped into the Octagon against gritty MMA veteran Leslie Smith. Despite enduring a brutal weight cut, during which footage emerged of Cyborg crying while attempting to make weight, the Invicta FC champ won the fight via 1st round TKO, putting on a rather impressive display in her UFC debut. It would be four months until Cyborg returned to the Octagon, where she faced Swedish striking ace Lina Lansberg in the main event of ‘UFC Fight Night: Sao Paulo’. Again, despite a brutal weight-cut, Cyborg won the fight via 2nd round TKO in impressive fashion, dominating the fight from bell to bell.
