Back in March, former welterweight contender and surging middleweight star Kelvin Gastelum scored an incredible, first-round knockout win over MMA legend Vitor Belfort. Unfortunately, this loss has been scratched from Gastelum’s record, and replaced with the words “no contest.” Shortly after his defeat of Belfort, news broke that Gastelum had tested positive for the banned substance carboxy-tetrahydrocannabinol – more commonly known as THC, which is a key metabolite in marijuana. With this news, Gastelum was yanked from a planned middleweight bout with another Brazilian legend in Anderson Silva, and temporarily suspended.

The next UFC pay-per-view on the horizon is UFC 211. This massive card will go down inside the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas this Saturday night (May 13). The stacked UFC 211 will be headlined by a heavyweight title fight between reigning, defending champion Stipe Miocic and former champion Junior Dos Santos. This anticipated heavyweight title showdown will be a rematch of a late 2014 bout, which saw Dos Santos walk away with a hard fought unanimous decision win. Since this first battle with Dos Santos, Miocic has not lost, defeating Mark Hunt, Andrei Arlovski, Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem, all by knockout or TKO. Dos Santos, meanwhile, has fought just twice since then, first losing to Alistair Overeem, then rebounding with a dominant decision defeat of Ben Rothwell.

Top-10 UFC lightweight Michael Johnson has not been seen in the Octagon since November of 2016, when he succumbed to a third-round submission dealt by undefeated Dagestani star Khabib Nurmagomedov. This, however, is not for lack of trying. Having recovered from his loss to Nurmagomedov, Johnson has been eager for a return to the cage for some time. Unfortunately, he’s had a very difficult time finding a willing dance partner. On the latest edition of BJ Penn Radio, Johnson explained that he believes this is because many of the UFC’s top lightweights are reluctant to take tough fights.

While the fight, which culminated in a blowout decision win for Canelo, was an interesting watch, the biggest headline the evening produced occured after the fight, when it was announced that Canelo will finally meet fellow star Gennady Golovkin – more widely known as GGG – on September 16 in Las Vegas.

Back in November, Conor McGregor delivered a second round knockout of Eddie Alvarez, becoming the UFC lightweight champion in the process. Given that he still owned the promotion’s featherweight title at the time, this made him the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes concurrently. With this accomplishment, McGregor’s stock rose higher than ever. Despite the new and unprecedented heights of his stardom after his knockout of Alvarez, McGregor followed this win with the news that he’d be taking some time away from the sport. The reason, he announced, was that he was expecting his first child with long-time girlfriend Dee Devlin.

The welterweight champion stated earlier this month that while he would like to fight in July, nobody is prepared to step up and challenge him for the belt. Woodley took specific aim at UFC welterweight contender Demian Maia, who opted to sign to fight Jorge Masvidal at UFC 211 next weekend rather than sit and wait for a title shot against the winner of Woodley vs. Thompson II.

Former UFC middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva returned to the win column this year as he picked up a decision win over Derek Brunson at UFC 208. Following the win, Anderson Silva was slated to fight streaking middleweight Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 211. Unfortunately for Silva, Gastelum was pulled from the fight after failing a USADA-administered drug test for marijuana metabolites. The former champ was left without an opponent for the scrap, and while the UFC looked to find him a replacement, they were unable to do so in time.

Following the vicious KO loss, Cerrone’s name was surprisingly absent from MMA headlines despite the fact that ‘Cowboy’ is one of the most active fighters in the UFC. Now, with Cerrone set to face Robbie Lawler in July at UFC 213, he revealed that the reason he has been absent from the Octagon is actually due to UFC President Dana White sidelining him.

Former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson has earned the reputation as one of the most polite, and well spoken fighters in the world. After fighting out his contract with the UFC, Henderson signed with Bellator MMA in 2016. In his first Bellator MMA fight, the former champ dropped a unanimous decision to Andrey Koreshkov at Bellator 153 for the Bellator welterweight championship. Just four months later, ‘Smooth’ picked up a TKO win over Patricio Freire, also winning his first fight under the Bellator MMA banner. Unfortunately for Henderson, in his most recent fight he dropped a split decision to Michael Chandler for the Bellator lightweight championship.

It’s typical to see Donald Cerrone fight about four times a year, being one of the more active fighters in the UFC. We’ve seen Cerrone turn around and fight twice in the Octagon is a span of 15 days back when he fought Myles Jury and former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson back in January 2015. “Cowboy” last fought on January 28, where he lost for the fist time at welterweight in the UFC as Jorge Masvidal ended his four-fight winning streak at 170. With the recent announcement of Cerrone meeting former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in the middle of the Octagon at UFC 213 on July 8, Cerrone says he was forced to take some time off after his TKO loss to Masvidal.
