Dana White: Amanda Nunes cleared to fight, pulled out anyway

Saturday morning, fight fans were stunned to learn that UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes had reportedly been hospitalized, and was forced to withdraw from her scheduled main event scrap with Valentina Shevchenko. Nunes had reportedly been ill throughout the course of fight week prior to her withdrawal; however in a surprising turn of events, UFC President Dana White has now revealed that Nunes was actually cleared to fight by doctors.

Saturday afternoon the MMA community was stunned to learn that just hours before she was scheduled to step into the Octagon to fight Valentina Shevchenko, Amanda Nunes had been pulled from the card after being hospitalized. Without missing a beat, UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk offered to step in and fight Shevchenko on short notice given that she was already in Las Vegas. Jedrzejczyk took to social media in an attempt to pressure the UFC to help her get cleared to fight on short notice.

In a surprising turn of events, after UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes was pulled from her UFC 213 main event scrap with Amanda Nunes tonight in Las Vegas, UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk, who is teammates with Amanda Nunes at American Top Team, is now attempting to convince UFC President Dana White to allow her to step in on short notice to fight Valentina Shevchenko. Unfortunate news surfaced Saturday morning that UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes had been hospitalized ahead of her UFC 213 title defense against Valentina Shevchenko tonight. Shortly after, MMAJunkie’s John Morgan confirmed with UFC President Dana White that Nunes was indeed off the card. Interestingly enough, UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk attempted to convince White to allow her to step in for Nunes to fight Shevchenko, who she has competed against Shevchenko in the Muay Thai world.

Friday night in the TUF 25 Redemption Finale, former WSOF champion Justin Gaethje picked up a thrilling win over Michael Johnson in the main event, as the two delivered an action-packed two rounds that ultimately saw Gaethje pick up a TKO win over ‘The Meance’. Following the fight, Gaethje called out top ranked UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson to a scrap, explaining that he was looking for the quickest path to the interim lightweight title, and then a scrap with Conor McGregor for the undisputed title after McGregor has his ‘Fight of the Century’ boxing match with Floyd Mayweather on August 26th.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping and top middleweight contender Yoel Romero have a rather lengthy, and very public, rivalry going back quite some time now. Following Yoel Romero’s knockout of Chris Weidman at UFC 205, where Bisping was in attendance for his Fox Sports 1 duties, the ‘Soldier of God’ campaigned for a fight with Bisping, calling out “I love you Mike!” as part of his post-fight Octagon interview. This started a string of back and forth insults between the pair spanning across the next several months, which saw both men launch scathing verbal attacks at one another.
