Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson will return to the octagon at October’s UFC 229 event against former 155-pound title holder Anthony Pettis. “El Cucuy” was slated to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for the promotions undisputed lightweight title at April’s UFC 223 event, but was forced to withdraw from contest due to a knee injury.

From there, the UFC began a frantic search to find a replacement opponent for Magomedsharipov on short notice. As always, several fighters spoke up and offered to step in. None, however, could rival the cojones of Brazil’s John Lineker.

In terms of his next fight, Junior dos Santos has a few options. One option is rising Australian contender Tai Tuivasa, who he’s gone back-and-forth with on Twitter. Well, it seems that Tony Ferguson’s recent teasings of a return at UFC 229 weren’t for nothing! The former interim champion is officially back. MMAJunkie has confirmed that Ferguson will square off with the former UFC and WEC lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis on the October 6th event. If the bout will take place as the new co-main event is yet to be determined. The event’s current co-main event is set to be the heavyweight clash between Alexander Volkov and Derrick Lewis.
