During negotiations regarding the return of Georges St-Pierre, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley was mentioned as a potential opponent for the former welterweight kingpin given the fact that Woodley holds the belt once held by Georges St-Pierre. With that being said, GSP has now signed a new multi-fight UFC contract, and will now fight UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping later in the year. Despite Tyron Woodley currently being booked for a welterweight showdown with Stephen Thompson this Saturday in the main event of UFC 209, he was asked about the GSP-Bisping fight during a recent interview on Fox Sports, in which he said:

Yesterday, we learned that the first fight of his anticipated comeback will pit him against middleweight champion Michael Bisping, at a to-be-determined date and location. This news, unsurprisingly, thrust the combat sports world into a frenzy, as some fans applauded the matchup, and others shook their heads at the way St-Pierre’s title shot sabotages the many more deserving middleweight contenders – contenders like Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Luke Rockhold, Robert Whittaker, Gegard Mousasi, and of course, streaking Cuban powerhouse Yoel Romero.

Earlier this month, we learned that former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre had finally worked out his differences with the UFC and agreed to the terms of a new contract. This implied an imminent comeback for the Canadian MMA legend. The details of St-Pierre’s comeback fight, however, remained fairly nebulous. We did not know when, where or against whom he would be fighting. As of this morning, that is no longer the case. While the date and location of St-Pierre’s anticipated comeback fight is still a mystery, we do know who the welterweight great will fight in his return. He’ll be taking on Michael Bisping for the UFC middleweight title. This fight was announced by UFC President Dana White on ESPN.

Georges St-Pierre is the greatest welterweight in MMA history, and after a long hiatus from the sport, he’s ready to return to the Octagon. In a somewhat surprising twist, however, we’ve learned that St-Pierre isn’t particularly interested in attempting to reclaim the welterweight title, which will be up for grabs when champ Tyron Woodley and challenger Stephen Thompson fight in the main event of UFC 209 this weekend. In a recent interview with ESPN (via MMAFighting.com), Woodley weighed in on St-Pierre’s apparent disinterest in the welterweight crown. According to the current champ, this is because the former champ wants to steer clear of him.

The pair scrapped in the main event of UFC 167, where St-Pierre picked up a controversial split decision to retain the welterweight championship. With news surfacing this week that St-Pierre is officially back in the UFC after signing a new multi-fight deal, the former champ has now proclaimed that despite the lengthy layoff, he believes that the current GSP would beat the past GSP, who dominated the welterweight division for so many years.
