Luke Rockhold: Bisping vs. GSP fight is a joke

At a to-be-determined date later this year, former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will return from a long hiatus to challenge Michael Bisping for the UFC middleweight title. Given that St-Pierre has never fought at middleweight before, his being given this opportunity over deserving middleweight contenders like Yoel Romero and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza has generated ample criticism. The latest of this criticism comes from former champion Luke Rockhold. On UFC Tonight Rockhold suggested that, while a champion should be able to pick their challengers out of a small pool of top-5 foes, picking a challenger who’s never fought in the division before is a bit excessive. While this fight has got some members of the MMA community very excited, it’s generated criticism from others for the way it deprives the top middleweight contenders of the title shots they deserve. During a recent appearance on UFC Tonight, former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold offered his own criticism of this booking, suggesting that it could set a dangerous precedent, as legitimate ranking-driven matchmaking gives way to a focus on so-called “money fights”.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping has what is likely be the biggest fight of his life coming up as he is set to take on former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who returns to fight once again after taking over three years off from competition. Bisping last fought at UFC 204 back in October as he successfully defended his belt for the first time in his close rematch with MMA legend Dan Henderson. Following the fight, Bisping said that he needed some work done on his knee that would put him out of competition until likely the second quarter of 2017.

Yoel Romero has earned a shot at Michael Bisping’s UFC middleweight title – that’s pretty much undeniable at this point. Unfortunately, Romero’s title shot was put on the back-burner by the UFC, as the organization instead opted to give the next middleweight shot to returning welterweight legend Georges St-Pierre. On Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Romero weighed in on this bothersome situation, telling host Ariel Helwani that he’d be interested in an interim title fight with Anderson Silva as a way to stay busy while he waits for the Bisping vs. St-Pierre winner.

When the UFC brass ironed out their differences with former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, and pencilled him in for an immediate middleweight title shot against divisional king Michael Bisping, their hope was clearly for a positive reception. Unfortunately for them, this booking has been met with plenty in the way of backlash, as its been criticized by fighters like Yoel Romero and Kelvin Gastelum, MMA personalities like Joe Rogan, and of course, the sport’s ever-passionate fans. Not everyone, however, is bent out of shape over this booking. Streaking middleweight contender Robert Whittaker, for example, has adopted a laissez faire outlook on the whole ordeal. In a recent interview with BJPenn.com’s Tom Taylor, Whittaker explained that he’s not particularly bothered by the booking, and that he hopes it produces the massive payday both Bisping and St-Pierre are looking for. He even admitted that he’s excited to watch the fight.

Former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre has not fought in over three years now. The last time ‘Rush’ stepped into the Octagon to fight, he was competing against Johny Hendricks in hopes of defending his welterweight title for the 9th time. St-Pierre and Hendricks went to war over the course of 5 rounds before St-Pierre was awarded the split decision win over Hendricks. Immediately after the fight, St-Pierre took an indefinite leave of absence. With speculation arising as to why the 170 pound kingpin was walking away from the sport as such a dominant time in his career, St-Pierre pointed to the UFC’s drug testing policies, expressing a dissatisfaction with the lack of thorough drug testing.
