Scott Hernandez - February 11, 2017

While it has been nearly five years since former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre stepped into the Octagon for his final fight, a welterweight title defense against Johny Hendricks, headlines regarding a potential Georges St-Pierre return have continued to surface. Most recently, all signs pointed to the former champ returning to the Octagon last year after reports began to surface that negotiations with the UFC had been going well after he and UFC President Dana White buried the hatchet. Unfortunately, while it looked as though St-Pierre would be returning to the Octagon to fight middleweight champion Michael Bisping, the former champ took to social media to release a statement on why he would be unable to fight Bisping, saying:

Tyron Woodley explains campaign for Georges St-Pierre superfight

Scott Hernandez - February 3, 2017

Last year, after winning the UFC welterweight championship by knocking out Robbie Lawler in the very first round of their UFC 201 scrap, newly crowned UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley immediately began to call for a superfight with either former welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre, or MMA veteran Nick Diaz. While the idea of a potential Georges St-Pierre superfight had fight fans talking, at first it wasn’t for the best reasons. Many fans perceived this as Woodley ducking welterweight #1 contender Stephen Thompson, and Woodley ultimately signed to fight Thompson at UFC 205 in New York to close out the year after negotiations between St-Pierre and the UFC failed, resulting in both Woodley and UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping missing out on a potential Georges St-Pierre superfight.

This year, talks of GSP making a return to the Octagon picked up quite a bit of steam as all signs pointed to St-Pierre returning to the Octagon on December 10th to fight Michael Bisping for the middleweight championship in Toronto, Canada.

Former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre’s ongoing dispute with the UFC has been an extremely long one with many unanticipated bumps in the road. While St-Pierre has maintained that he is ready to once again return to the Octagon, and end his 3-year hiatus, he and the UFC have been unable to reach a deal that would see ‘Rush’ return to action. Several months ago, all signs pointed to St-Pierre returning to the Octagon at UFC 206 in Toronto to fight Michael Bisping for the middleweight championship on December 10th. While both men agreed to the bout, one major hangup stood in the way, St-Pierre’s sponsorship with Under Armour.
