While Conor McGregor and Rafael dos Anjos may not have fought at UFC 196 for the lightweight championship as initially planned, McGregor’s training for dos Anjos very well could have helped him prepare for his current opponent, Eddie Alvarez. McGregor, who faces Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 this Saturday, where he hopes to capture the lightweight championship and become the first man in the history f the UFC to simultaneously hold two championship belts, was set to face dos Anjos in the main event of UFC 196 back in March for the lightweight title. Unfortunately, just two weeks before the fight, dos Anjos pulled out of the fight with a broken foot and was replaced by Nate Diaz, who ultimately handed McGregor the first loss of his UFC career.

The two opponents had their verbal warfare going back and forth but one of the exchanges, in particular, was quite entertaining. While the moment certainly appeared to be an intense one for fans, with McGregor getting in Alvarez’ face, forcing UFC President Dana White to separate them, Alvarez stated after the event that he had never felt more unthreatened by an opponent than he did when he came face to face with McGregor.

In addition, McGregor’s UFC 202 rematch with Nate Diaz back in August set the UFC pay-per view record, dethroning UFC 100 as the biggest pay-per view in company history. In addition, McGregor’s first fight with Nate Diaz, UFC 196, also ranks as the third biggest pay-per view in company history behind UFC 100, and UFC 202.
