Tom Taylor - October 25, 2017

Back in August, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. stepped through the ropes of the ring to take part in one of the biggest fights in combat sports history. While the fight was widely expected to shatter previously-set records for pay-per-view sales, however, it was ultimately reported to have fallen short, coming up shy of the record set by Mayweather’s 2015 battle with Manny Pacquiao. Contrary to reports that the fight didn’t actually break the record, UFC President Dana White is maintaining that it did.

Dana White: UFC could bring boxing events "under our umbrella"

Tom Taylor - October 25, 2017

There has been some serious intermingling between the sports of mixed martial arts and boxing over the last year. Thats’s thanks in large part to Conor McGregor‘s blockbuster showdown with the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr., but also to the interest of fighters like Stipe Miocic, Jimi Manuwa, Artem Lobov and Cris Cyborg in testing their skills in the boxing ring. From the sounds of it, UFC fighters that are interested in donning heavier gloves and stepping through the ropes might not have to go far to do so. Speaking on The Unnamed Podvideocast, UFC President Dana White suggested that the UFC could one day promote boxing matches.

The Association of Boxing Commissions recently approved the introduction of four new weight classes to professional Mixed Martial Arts. A 165 pound super lightweight division, 175 pound super welterweight division, 195 pound super middleweight division, and 225 pound cruiserweight division have been approved for MMA but it is ultimately up the promotions to open these divisions for the fighters to compete in. Issues with fighters missing weight or weight cutting has been a problem and many think that opening more weight divisions for fighters to compete in could ease up some of the weight cutting issues in mixed martial arts. However, UFC President Dana White doesn’t believe that new weight classes are the solution to the problem.
