Conor McGregor’s attack on the UFC 223 fighter bus (see it here) nearly left the card without a co-main event, as UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas was badly rattled by the ordeal, having nearly been injured by one of the Irishman’s projectiles. Apparently, it was all severe enough that she was almost forced off the card. Luckily, Namajunas is reported to have regrouped, and decided to compete as planned on Saturday night. Shortly after Conor McGregor and his entourage caused a scene of absolute mayhem at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY, (watch that here) reports began to surface that the Irish star had been arrested. Apparently, these reports were premature, as McGregor is not yet in custody. Artem Lobov, meanwhile, who is one of McGregor’s main training partners, and a key player in today’s fracas, has been removed from his UFC 223 undercard fight with Alex Caceres.

With Khabib Nurmagomedov and last-minute replacement Max Holloway vying for lightweight gold in the main event of UFC 223 this weekend, the division’s current champion Conor McGregor is expected to be stripped of his title any day now. You can’t, after all, have two undisputed champions in the same division. While the UFC is likely to remove the “C” beside Conor McGregor’s name any day now, he doesn’t seem to be on board with the decision. Early on Thursday morning, the Irish superstar took to Twitter to give his thoughts on the matter.

It is still hard to believe that Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov will not be fighting this weekend at UFC 223. Ferguson was involved in a “freak accident” and suffered an injury on Friday at a “UFC-obligated media event” where he tore a ligament in his knee. Ferguson was forced to pull out of the main event fight taking place this weekend against Nurmagomedov, which marks the fourth time that a UFC matchup between the two UFC lightweights has been canceled.

By this point, we’ve all woken up, pinched ourselves, and come to grips with the unfortunate reality that Tony Ferguson’s UFC 223 withdrawal was not an elaborate April Fools joke or a nightmare. The interim lightweight champ really has been forced out of the fight with a leg injury—a leg injury he sustained while he was walking, if you can believe that. The good news is that we get a solid consolation prize. Nurmagomedov will still fight on the card, taking on a beefed up version of UFC featherweight champ Max Holloway, who steps up on just six days notice. The two will battle for the undisputed lightweight title.

UFC 223, which goes down April 7 in Brooklyn, NY, will be headlined by one of the biggest lightweight fights ever, as interim champ Tony Ferguson collides with undefeated contender Khabib Nurmagomedov. That is, unless disaster strikes, and one of the two men is forced out of the fight. This is what’s happened every single time the two lightweight stars have been scheduled to fight previously, and we’re all counting down the days to UFC 223, praying that it doesn’t happen again… If disaster does strike, and one fighter is forced out of the UFC 223 main event, it seems possible that Conor McGregor will attempt to step in and replace them. Whether the UFC and New York Athletic Commission would allow such a thing is difficult to say, but the Irish star is apparently keen to “stay ready,” and also seems to be working hard on his wrestling. Given the insane wrestling pedigree of both Nurmagomedov and Ferguson, this is definitely interesting…

He can fight the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson after UFC 223, the trilogy with Nate Diaz is always there, arguably the biggest potential fights though are with Georges St-Pierre or another exhibition bout with Floyd Mayweather. Or, he could always just go into pro wrestling. John Cena, who’s accomplishments in pro wrestling are longer than this article, believes McGregor would be amazing at it. “[Conor McGregor] would do fantastic [in the WWE]. Hell, he would put me out of work. He gets the entertainment aspect of sport and I think he gets it as good, or better, than anyone else. The way he promoted the fight against [Floyd] Mayweather; that’s what we do. He did it as good, or better, than us. It’s looking more and more likely that 41-year-old retired boxing legend Floyd Mayweather will step into the Octagon in the near future – though most of us still have understandable doubts that it will actually happen. If Mayweather does step into the cage, of course, he’ll be discounted against pretty much any opponent he fights. That is likely to be particularly true if he battles his arch rival Conor McGregor, who he defeated in the boxing ring back in August of 2017. As talk of Mayweather’s move to MMA continue to louden, sportsbook Westgate Las Vegas has released odds for a potential MMA showdown between the boxer and the MMA star. As expected, McGregor is considered a massive favorite, while Mayweather has been pegged as a significant underdog.

As we draw closer to UFC 223’s fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, we wonder when Conor McGregor will be stripped and if he’ll be there to watch the lightweight fight and cheer on his friend and teammate Artem Lobov. He has the power of choice. He can choose the winner of that fight and prove he’s still the very best lightweight in the world, or he can not care at all about the title and go for bigger and better things. Whatever is the biggest, Owen Roddy believes he’ll go for that. “That would be a big pay-per-view without a doubt. I still say that Conor brings most [of the PPV buys]. Like, I think I saw something about Firas [Zahabi] putting up like ‘let’s see who takes the biggest pay-per-view draw’. I’d be confident in saying that Conor is the biggest pay-per-view draw between him and GSP, but it would be an insane fight, it would be a crazy fight, it would be huge. It would be probably the biggest fight that the UFC has thrown, and yeah, it would be great.”
