This past weekend, top ranked UFC light heavyweight contender Alexander ‘The Mauler’ Gustafsson picked up an extremely impressive and dominant win over former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Glover Teixeira. While it took Gustafsson until the 5th round to actually finish Teixeira, ‘The Mauler’ managed to knock Texeira down twice throughout the fight, out-striking his opponent 108-62 on total strikes, as well as 97-42 on significant strikes.

With this win in the books, Gustafsson is now right on the precipice of another light heavyweight title shot – though it’s hard to say whether his next shot will come against champ Daniel Cormier or former champ Jon Jones, who fight in the main event of UFC 214 this July.

On Sunday afternoon, the UFC returned to the beautiful country of Sweden with UFC Stockholm, an exciting 12-fight card that emanated from the city’s Ericsson Globe Arena. Atop this 12-fight card was a key light heavyweight showdown between the UFC’s number one and two ranked light heavyweight contenders: the pride of Sweden himself Alexander Gustafsson, and dangerous Brazilian finisher Glover Teixeira. In the end, this bout went to Gustafsson, who was clearly the faster, sharper man from the get-go. Though Teixeira demonstrated remarkable resolve and durability throughout the fight, he could only absorb Gustafsson’s crackling combinations for so long, and was ultimately put down by beautiful combination in the fifth.

On May 28, the UFC will return to beautiful Stockholm, Sweden with what’s sure to be an exciting night of fights. If there was any worry among the dedicated Swedish fans that the card would be lacking in the big names department, that worry can now be put to bed. According to MMAFighting.com, the card will be headlined by a light heavyweight bout between Brazilian contender Glover Teixeira and Swedish star Alexander Gustafsson. Teixeira will enter this fight having dominated the outmatched Jared Cannonier on the main card of the UFC 208. With this win, the former title challenger rebounded from a crushing, 13-second knockout loss to upcoming title challenger Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. Prior to his loss to Johnson, Teixeira was enjoying a nice three-fight win-streak, having tapped Ovince St. Preux, and stopped Patrick Cummins and Rashad Evans with strikes. The 37 year old Brazilian is currently 26-5 overall.

Recently, news surfaced that top ranked UFC light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson had been forced to pull out of his UFC Fight Night: 100 scrap with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, where ‘The Mauler’ would look to build momentum on his ‘UFC Fight Night: Hamburg’ win over Jan Blanhowicz last month. Unfortunately for Gustafsson, he was forced out of the fight almost immediately after the fight had been announced. At the time of his withdrawal, no word was given as to the nature of the injury which was forcing the Swede to pull out of the fight, however now his co-manager Tomas Ghassemi, it was a back injury, which will see Gustafsson sidelined indefinitely.
