The rampant talk of Floyd Mayweather’s potential move to MMA continues. The ostensibly retired boxer is now claiming that he’s begun the early phases of his preparation, and that there’s a 50-50 chance he’ll fight in four-ounce gloves before the end of 2018.

Earlier this week, the combat sports world was inundated by rumors that the UFC was considering locking up the services of boxing heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua – to the tune of almost $500 million. The idea, rumor had it, was to use Joshua as a tool to kickstart Zuffa’s foray into the world of boxing (not to have him compete in MMA). While the sources of these rumors were undeniably dubious, Joshua seems to have heard them, and he seems intrigued – like anybody who hears their own name and “$500 million” mentioned in the same sentence would be.

It’s looking more and more likely that 41-year-old retired boxing legend Floyd Mayweather will step into the Octagon in the near future – though most of us still have understandable doubts that it will actually happen. If Mayweather does step into the cage, of course, he’ll be discounted against pretty much any opponent he fights. That is likely to be particularly true if he battles his arch rival Conor McGregor, who he defeated in the boxing ring back in August of 2017. As talk of Mayweather’s move to MMA continue to louden, sportsbook Westgate Las Vegas has released odds for a potential MMA showdown between the boxer and the MMA star. As expected, McGregor is considered a massive favorite, while Mayweather has been pegged as a significant underdog.

Last week, we learned that UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley had offered to help undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. prepare for his much-discussed move to MMA. Speaking to TMZ this week, Mayweather confirmed that he plans to take Woodley up on this offer. “I’m going to start soon,” Mayweather said (h/t MMAJunkie). “We’ve been texting back and forth. We talked a couple times, but we’re going to start working out real soon.”

What are the odds? Turns out pretty good. Floyd Mayweather has been teasing a transition into MMA like a politician, flipping and flopping on whether it will really happy or not. Dana White revealed the talks were true, until Mayweather called him a liar and then proceeded to continue to post social media winks on his account. UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley had linked up with Moeny Mayweather to help prepare him for his UFC debut. “Floyd Mayweather is interested in taking a mixed martial art bout, maybe a few of them, so who better than The Chose One to teach him the ropes on how we get off the ropes and get in the cage. I saw him at the Jordan party during the All-Star weekend, we started chatting about training MMA and we decided let’s connect, let’s hook up in Vegas and do some training. Get him ready for MMA. Y’all think it’s a joke but think about this: Floyd Mayweather’s one of the best strikers of all times. How many guys in the UFC that can’t wrestle, and can’t grapple and they consider themselves a stand-up fighter? If they have to stand across from one of the greatest strikers ever, they’re gonna be in a world of smoke.”

Over the past weeks, boxing legend and great, Floyd Mayweather has used his social media accounts to tease fans with what looks like a transition to MMA… Nothing at all is confirmed right now and who knows if anything is close to becoming official behind the scenes. All we know is that UFC President, Dana White has expressed interest in having Mayweather fight for him in an MMA format and of course, his most recent opponent, UFC lightweight champion, Conor McGregor has shown interest in this as well. Who isn’t very interested in this though? Well, surely there’s a broad answer to that question as the circus surrounding McGregor has gone on for quite some time now. But specifically, the Mayweather team doesn’t look to really want this to happen and if it did, they don’t think Mayweather would fair well.
