Vitor Belfort explains why he fought through injury at UFC 224

Tom Taylor - May 21, 2018

Earlier this month, MMA legend Vitor Belfort stepped into the UFC’s Octagon for a final time, taking on fellow Brazilian legend Lyoto Machida. He did so on the main card of UFC 224, which went down in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the end, this fight with Machida went disastrously for Belfort, as he was knocked out by a brutal kick to the face — the same kick Anderson Silva famously used to put him down years ago. Shortly after this loss, news surfaced that Vitor Belfort had entered the cage at UFC 224 with a fairly significant injury. On Friday, Belfort took to Instagram to explain why he fought through this injury, rather than withdrawing from the fight and attempting to reschedule.

Wanderlei Silva still wants Rampage Jackson fight, but would take Dan Henderson or Vitor Belfort

Drake Riggs - May 17, 2018

We’ve only seen the ‘Axe Murderer’, Wanderlei Silva step foot in the cage once in the last five years. That time being for when he headlined Bellator’s big Madison Square Garden show, Bellator 180 opposite his longtime rival, Chael Sonnen. ‘The American Gangster’ would go on to earn the unanimous decision victory by grinding out Silva in his usual fashion and then enter into Bellator’s heavyweight Grand Prix title tournament where he would defeat Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson in the opening round.

Vitor Belfort breaks silence on KO loss to Lyoto Machida

Tom Taylor - May 14, 2018

Last weekend, on the main card of UFC 224, MMA legend Vitor Belfort stepped into the UFC’s Octagon for a final time. His opponent in this swan song was a fellow Brazilian legend in Lyoto Machida. Regrettably, Belfort’s Hall-of-Fame worthy career didn’t wrap up the way he planned. Instead, he had his batteries removed by a second-round front-kick to the face — the very same maneuver that Anderson Silva used to beat him in 2011, and the same kick Machida used to retire Randy Couture that same year.

Vitor Belfort is retiring at UFC 224 — but maybe not forever

Tom Taylor - March 29, 2018

At UFC 224, which goes down on May 12 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, MMA legend Vitor Belfort will compete in the final fight of his career opposite another Brazilian hero in Lyoto Machida. Yet while Belfort has assured for some time that this will be his last fight, it doesn’t sound like that is completely set in stone. “It’s what I said: in reality, it will be my final fight and my journey is ending,” Belfort told MMAJunkie. “But [there’s] nothing that a good contract – what, seven digits? – can’t do in terms of helping us return. I’ll keep training. I love doing this. But there needs to be a meaning. There needs to be a purpose and it needs to be something that makes sense.”

Vitor Belfort Blasts 'Scared' Michael Bisping for Refusing to Fight Him

Justin Golightly - January 17, 2018

The middleweight division was about to get rewound back to normal, that is until Robert Whittaker got injured. That’s not the only curve ball the division got thrown. Urijah Hall failed to weigh in and was taken out of his fight with Vitor Belfort. Many jumped to the conclusion that this opened the door for Belfort to fight former rival Michael Bisping in a double retirement fight at UFC London. It seemed like the fight was more than just talk, until Bisping said he wanted nothing to do with the ‘cheat’. Belfort isn’t taking no for an answer though, coming back with a social media low blow. “What a shame Michael Bisping. The UFC just informed me that you have declined the fight. I understand you are scared. The images above pretty much explain it all. So stop pretending that you are tough and just admit that you are afraid. And I thought you were man enough to step up in the octagon with me again, my mistake. Unfortunately, it looks like we will not be delivering to the fans the fight they want to see. Happy retirement, you must be feeling amazing leaving the sport through the back door. To be a legend is not for everyone.” — Vitor Belfort on his official Instagram.
