Tatsuro Taira’s motivation for UFC 327 fight is clear: “I have to win the belt for Japan”

Tatsuro Taira knows how meaningful it would be to represent Japan as a UFC champion.
Despite Japan’s rich history in combat sports, a Japanese-born fighter has yet to win UFC gold. Taira will have an opportunity to change that when he challenges Joshua Van for the flyweight gold at UFC 327 on April 11.
Appearing on MMA Junkie Radio, Taira talked about the importance of attempting to make history for his home country.
“It’s a huge dream for Japan,” Taira said. “I will win this for all the fans in Japan. I have to win the UFC belt for Japan.”
Taira is aware of the dangers that Van will present on fight night. Still, “The Best” isn’t fazed by the challenges that lie ahead.
“He’s the hardest opponent I’ve ever faced because he has strong takedown defense,” Taira said. “But I’ve prepared for any situation. He probably is the best fighter I’ve ever faced, especially thinking of his youth and momentum and the energy he has now.
“I am confident in my striking and my ground game, so I want to finish by submission. But I don’t know what’s going to happen. I am focused on just finishing him.”
Taira earned his UFC Flyweight Championship opportunity with a second-round TKO finish over Brandon Moreno back in Dec. 2025. It was the second straight win for Taira, and his pro MMA record improved to 18-1.
On that same night, Van won the UFC flyweight gold following unforeseen circumstances. Just 26 seconds into the fight, Alexandre Pantoja suffered a gnarly arm injury that caused the fight to be stopped. While the finish was quick and anticlimactic, Van is hoping to prove he’s right where he belongs when he meets Taira in Miami.
