Stephen Thompson makes massive jump up UFC welterweight rankings

By bjpenndotcom - February 9, 2016

This past Saturday at ‘UFC Fight Night: Las Vegas’ Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson shocked the world as he ran right through former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks. Thompson showed that his style of kickboxing works against elite level wrestlers such as Johny Hendricks as he picked up an impressive 1st round TKO win.

With the win over Hendricks, Thompson found himself in an interesting position in a stacked UFC welterweight division. After Johny Hendricks was hospitalized due to a weight-cut mishap at UFC 192, the UFC promised Tyron Woodley the next fight against welterweight champion Robbie Lawler. However after the controversial split decision at UFC 195, Carlos Condit is campaigning for a rematch with Robbie Lawler.

Now, Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson finds himself sitting at #3 on the UFC’s official welterweight rankings, behind Rory Macdonald (#1) and Tyron Woodley (#2). Thompson jumped up 5 spots to land at #3.

Neither Rory MacDonald nor Tyron Woodley currently have fights booked, however with Woodley being promised the next title shot, if the UFC chooses to make good on that promise we could see a MacDonald vs. Wonderboy scrap. However given his dominant performance against Johny Hendricks this past weekend, we could also see the UFC cash in on the hype of Lawler vs. Wonderboy.
