UFC Fight Night 98 Results: Diego Sanchez defeats Marcin Held

A lightweight scrap between Marcin Held and Diego Sanchez served as the co-main event of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 98 card in Mexico City. Round one begins and Sanchez lands a nice body kick to start. Held comes forward with a combo that misses the mark. He lands a counter right hand. Diego eats the shot and attempts a high kick. Diego misses with an uppercut and eats a knee. Held shoots in for a takedown and presses Sanchez against the cage. Diego shakes him off and breaks free. Sanchez with a front kick. He comes forward with punches. The last of which finds a home. A nice body kick scores for Diego. A nice combination lands for Held. He scores with a left. Sanchez eats the shots and walks him down. Held with a cartwheel kick. Diego lands a high kick in reply. A nice left hand scores for Sanchez. Both men land shots. Diego shoots in for a takedown attempt. Held defends well. He locks in a guillotine choke. Diego literally runs up the cage to escape the submission. That was impressive. The fighters trade shots and the horn sounds to end round one.
UFC Fight Night 98 Results: Ricardo Lamas submits Charles Oliveira

A featherweight bout between Ricardo Lamas and Charles Oliveira (Oliveira missed weight by 10 pounds) took place on tonight’s UFC Fight Night 98 main card in Mexico City. Round one begins and Lamas lands a leg kick and then a body kick to start. Lamas lands another kick to the body. Oliveira gets the clinch but Lamas uses the position to slam Charles to the floor. Ricardo moves to half guard. He lands a nasty elbow from the top. Oliveira is looking for a leg lock. He almost gets it. He uses the position to escape and he quickly jumps on Lamas’ back. Ricardo shakes him off but Oliveira picks him up and slams him down. Charles locks in a choke and this is not good for “The Bully”. Lamas does an excellent job to escape the hold and winds up on his back in guard. Oliveira with a big elbow from the top. He gets the back of Lamas and locks in a body triangle. This is a bad spot for Lamas. Nice elbows from Charles. And another. Oliveira sinks in the rear-naked choke and it is deep. Lamas gets saved by the bell. Wow.
UFC Fight Night 98 Results: Martin Bravo TKO's Claudio Puelles

A lightweight bout between Martin Bravo and Claudio Puelles took place on tonight’s UFC Fight Night 98 main card in Mexico City. Round one begins and they fighters are happy to trade strikes early. Puelles goes in for a takedown but Bravo says no and lands an elbow. Bravo is applying the pressure here. He lands a nice jab. Claudio replies with a leg kick but that does not slow down Bravo’s approach. Bravo with a right hand that scores. Puelles with a nice left, but Bravo continues to press. They trade punches. Puelles shoots for a single leg. It is not there. Puelles is relentless with these takedown attempts, and he finally gets one. However, Bravo uses the cage to get back up quickly. Spinning kick from Puelles. Bravo with punches. Puelles nose is now bleeding. Big right hand from Bravo to close out the round.
UFC Fight Night 98 Results: Beneil Dariush defeats Rashid Magomedov

A lightweight bout between Beneil Dariush and Rashid Magomedov took place on tonight’s UFC Fight Night 98 main card in Mexico City. Round one begins and Dariush throws a high kick to start. He comes forward and lands a jab. Beneil misses with a head kick but lands low kick. Beneil presses Magomedov against the cage. He lands a knee inside. Dariush attempts a takedown but gets swept and Magomedov takes his back briefly. A couple of shots landed from Rashid and Beneil breaks free. A low blow connects on Beneil and we have a brief break. Upon the restart Dariush lands a low kick. He throws a jab and follows that up with a kick to the body. A nice superman punch lands for Beneil and then a kick to the body. Magomedov gets a hold of Beneil and presses him up against the cage. Rashid lands a trip takedown and winds up in half guard as round one comes to an end.

A bout between Marco Polo Reyes and Jason Novelli served as the second fight of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 98 event in Mexico City. Novelli starts things off with a leg kick. Reyes replies with a right hand. Marco is circling trying to find his way inside. Novelli with another leg kick. Reyes is applying the pressure. He misses with a jab to the body but lands a follow up overhand left. A nice body kick scores for Novelli. He circles away and misses with a right. Reyes misses with a looping left. Novelli shoots in and scores a takedown. Reyes pops right back up to his feet. Novelli retreats but lands an eye poke on Reyes. After a very brief break we are back to the action. Reyes with a leg kick. He presses forward with a combination. Round one comes to an end.

A featherweight bout between Chris Avila (5-4 MMA) and Enrique Barzola (13-3-1 MMA) kicked off tonight’s UFC Fight Night 98 event in Mexico City. Round one begins and Barzola scores with a nice combination to start. He shoots in and scores a quick takedown on Avila. Chris is able to scramble right back to hit feet. Nice leg kicks from Barzola. Avila returns fir with a right. Both men exchange nice shots. Barzola gets a hold of Avila and presses him against the fence. He is able to pick Avila up and slam him to the floor. Avila is doing a nice job of preventing Enrique from entering his guard. Eventually Barzola does break through the defense of Avila but Chris again scrambles and gets back to his feet. Barzola just misses with a big right hand. He scores with a body shot and then a body kick. He shoots in and scores a single leg takedown. Barzola with some shots. Avila gets up to his feet. Barzola has him pressed against the cage. He scores with a right and then they break. A big leg kick lands for Enrique. Round one comes to an end.

Friday afternoon, #8 ranked UFC featherweight Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Oliveira stepped onto the scale to weigh-in for his ‘The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America 3’ Finale scrap with Ricardo Lamas on Saturday. Oliveira hit the scales and weighed-in a whopping nine pounds overweight, nearly an entire weight-class, 10 pounds over the featherweight limit if taking into account the extra pound allowance for fighters when weighing-in for non-title fights.

On January 21st, former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, and former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen will step into the cage under the Bellator MMA banner in a highly anticipated matchup. When Sonnen celebrated the end of his two-year suspension several months ago, it was announced that he was coming out of retirement, and had already signed an exclusive multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA. In addition, Sonnen called out former UFC champ Tito Ortiz for his first Bellator MMA fight. Ultimately, the pair were booked to fight in the main event of Bellator 170 on January 21st, a date targeted by Ortiz due to the fact that it’s just two days before his birthday.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping is an extremely polarizing figure. ‘The Count’ is never one to shy away from speaking his mind, even when it means he faces backlash from his fellow fighters, or the MMA community. For example, after his UFC 204 win over Dan Henderson in Manchester, England, last month, Bisping took time out of his post-fight Octagon interview to shred the rest of the top ranked middleweights. Despite a 5-fight win streak that has seen him go 3-0 over the course of 2016, winning the middleweight championship by knocking out Luke Rockhold on just two weeks notice before then defending the belt just months later by defeating Dan Henderson via unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 204.
