Last night, in the co-main event of UFC on Fox 24, fan favorite strawweight “The Karate Hottie” Michelle Waterson stepped onto the canvas with the ever-dangerous Rose Namajunas. Had she won this fight, she likely would have earned herself a shot at the winner of Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Jessica Andrade’s strawweight title fight, which is scheduled for UFC 211 this May 13. Regrettably for Waterson and her legions of fans, it was simply Namajunas’ night.

Last night, on the main card of UFC on Fox 24, Australia-based Kiwi Robert Whittaker stepped onto the canvas with former Strikeforce middleweight king Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. The bout marked the biggest test of the 26 year old Whittaker’s career. Despite the scale of this test, Whittaker passed it with flying colors. First, he reversed an early Jacare takedown, and escaped back to his feet – something very few middleweights have been able to do against the dangerous BJJ whiz. From there, Whittaker began to pick his foe apart on the feet, dropping him once with a punch, and ultimately polishing him off with a head-kick and a storm of followup ground strikes.

On Friday night, Brazilian grappling sensation Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza was one of the hottest contenders in the middleweight division, and one of the most deserving men of a shot at Michael Bisping’s middleweight title. On Saturday night, he was dropped by a second-round Robert Whittaker head-kick, and polished off by a meteor shower of ground strikes. Things change awfully quickly in mixed martial arts. Shortly after this upset loss to Whittaker – which marks his first stoppage loss since a 2008 up-kick induced knockout dealt by Gegard Mousasi – Jacare took to Instagram to issue a short statement on his situation.

Last night, in the co-main event of UFC on Fox 24, strawweight star Rose Namajunas dominated the dangerous Michelle Waterson to a second-round submission win, establishing herself as the division’s top contender as she did. Having done so, she can now probably look forward to a fight with the winner of UFC 211’s Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Jessica Andrade title fight sometime later this year – at least, that’s her hope. Speaking to the media in the moments after UFC on Fox 24, Namajunas explained that her goal is to capture the UFC strawweight title before the year is out.

Last night, in the main event of UFC on Fox 24, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson – known by the ring name “Mighty Mouse” – made a whopping 10th straight defense of his title. He did so with a third-round, arm bar induced submission defeat of BJJ blackbelt Wilson Reis – an incredible feat in its own right. With this win, Johnson further solidified his status as the best fighter currently competing in mixed martial arts. He also tied Anderson Silva’s record for the most consecutive title defenses in UFC history, and as such, now has a real claim to the title of greatest of all time (G.O.A.T.).

Though UFC on Fox 24, which was highlighted by emphatic wins from Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, Rose Namajunas and Robert Whittaker, dominated the attention of MMA fans on Saturday night, it was not the only major MMA show on the calendar. Shortly after the UFC on Fox action wore down in Kansas City, Missouri, Nobuyuki Sakakibara helmed Pride-revival Rizin Fighting Federation touched down in beautiful Yokohama, Japan with its latest show – and it was pure brutality.

Last night, in the main event of UFC on Fox 24, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson – also known as “Mighty Mouse” – defended his throne for a whopping 10th consecutive time. He did so with a third-round arm bar induced submission of experienced Brazilian jiu jitsu blackbelt Wilson Reis – a real feat in itself. With this 10th straight defense, the flyweight champion tied middleweight legend Anderson Silva’s record for the most consecutive title defenses in UFC history. With this jaw-dropping, arm-bending, history-making submission win, Johnson solidified himself as one of the best fighters ever in mixed martial arts, and perhaps the best fighter competing at present. While these things are becoming more and more undeniable, however, Johnson has struggled to become a real, main stream star in mixed martial arts.

Perennial women’s strawweight contender Rose Namajunas scored an impressive second-round submission victory (rear-naked choke) over Michelle Waterson in the co-main event of tonight’s UFC on FOX 24 fight card in Kansas City. Rose was able to catch “The Karate Hottie” with a brutal high kick early in the second-round that sent Waterson crashing to the canvas. (Watch that here).
