Russell Ess - May 30, 2017

The UFC 212 pay-per-view event takes place this Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the main event of the evening, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will take on interim champion Max Holloway in a title unification bout. Top-ranked women’s strawweight contenders Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz will look to prove themselves worthy of another title shot in the co-main event of the evening. Also on the card, Brazilian MMA pioneer Vitor Belfort will meet Nate Marquardt in the Octagon for what “The Phenom” is saying will be his last fight in the UFC.

Yoel Romero praises Robert Whittaker, still wants Michael Bisping

bjpenndotcom - May 30, 2017

UFC middleweight #1 contender Yoel Romero is currently gearing up for his UFC 213 showdown with fellow top ranked contender Robert Whittaker on July 9th. While the fight will be for the interim UFC middleweight championship given Michael Bisping’s inability to defend his belt due to a knee injury, Romero is ultimately still seeking a fight with Bisping in hopes of defeating The Count.

Cat Zingano reveals Cris Cyborg fight being discussed

bjpenndotcom - May 30, 2017

Former UFC women’s bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano has been absent from the Octagon for nearly a year. In her most recent Octagon appearance at UFC 200 in July of 2016, Zingano returned to the Octagon following a year long hiatus that followed her first round submission loss to Ronda Rousey. When she made her return nearly a year ago, she was handed a unanimous decision loss from Julianna Pena, marking two straight defeats. While Zingano has taken quite a bit of time off between her last two fights, she isn’t looking to take any tune-up fights when she returns to the Octagon. In fact, Zingano welcomes a fight with arguably the most feared woman in the UFC, Cris Cyborg.

Rory MacDonald receives stern warning from Bellator middleweight champ

Tom Taylor - May 30, 2017

From the moment he joined the Bellator MMA roster, Rory MacDonald has made no secret of his plans. He wants to capture Bellator welterweight gold, he wants to capture Bellator middleweight gold, and he wants to take part in super fights with far heavier opponents ranging from Fedor Emelianenko to Wanderlei Silva. “I’d like to fight for the middleweight title maybe at the end of the year if there is a big card we can promote and get me and the middleweight champion on there,” MacDonald said shortly after his recent destruction of Paul Daley. “Obviously, I am not looking past the welterweight championship fight, I’m just saying if everything goes as planned. An end of the year show for the middleweight title would be fantastic.”

The future of the UFC's women's featherweight division is looking grim

Tom Taylor - May 30, 2017

Back in February, Germaine de Randamie and Holly Holm collided to crown the UFC’s first-ever women’s featherweight champion. Though there was a definite asterisk attached to this title fight due to the fact that it did not involve Cris “Cyborg” Justino – the division’s consensus best fighter – it was an exciting time for women’s MMA all the same. Unfortunately, the trouble for the new women’s featherweight division began almost immediately, as this inaugural title fight oozed with controversy.

Daniel Cormier: I'd sleep "Gustafsson's cheerleader" Jimi Manuwa

Tom Taylor - May 30, 2017

Last weekend, during the UFC’s latest trip to Stockholm, Sweden, British light heavyweight contender Jimi Manuwa was on site to support his training partner Alexander Gustafsson as he battled Glover Teixeira. When Gustafsson won this fight via fifth-round knockout, Manuwa was unsurprisingly supportive. Manuwa’s post-fight applause of Gustafsson generated a response from UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, who pointed out that, in victory, Gustafsson may have jumped ahead of Manuwa in the race for a title shot. This comment from DC then generated a response from a fan, which in turn started a heated Twitter battle with Manuwa.

After eye-poke, Glover Teixeira says he was seeing "three Gustafssons"

Tom Taylor - May 30, 2017

Last weekend, the UFC touched down in Stockholm, Sweden with an exciting 12-fight card. In the main event, the fighting pride of Sweden himself, Alexander Gustafsson, scored an impressive, fifth-round knockout win over the dangerous Glover Teixeira. For Teixeira, things obviously didn’t go as planned – and not only because he got knocked out. The Brazilian finisher also sustained an unfortunate eye-poke mid-way through the fight, which he says affected him significantly, though he does not attribute his loss to this accidental foul.

Germaine de Randamie issues statement on Cyborg, says she hopes to return to bantamweight

Tom Taylor - May 30, 2017

Earlier this year, in the main event of UFC 208, Dutch striker Germaine de Randamie outworked Holly Holm to become the UFC’s first-ever women’s featherweight champion. The understanding was that, from there, she would then defend against the featherweight division’s consensus best fighter, Cris “Cyborg” Justino. This is not the way things have unfolded.

Charles Oliveira wants to return to the featherweight division

Tom Taylor - May 29, 2017

Charles Oliveira has had an unfortunately long list of failed cuts to the featherweight division’s 145-pound cap. His latest failed cut occurred back in November, when he missed weight for a featherweight bout with Ricardo Lamas by a whopping 10 pounds. In the wake of this failed cut to featherweight – which culminated in a submission loss – Oliveira was sent back up to lightweight where the cut would be less severe. He made his lightweight return against former Bellator champ Will Brooks, and he couldn’t have looked better in doing so, locking up a standing rear-naked choke for the win.

Yair Rodriguez gives timetable for Octagon return

Tom Taylor - May 29, 2017

Earlier this month, on the main card of the stacked UFC 211, red hot Mexican featherweight prospect Yair Rodriguez faced the biggest test of his career in Frankie Edgar. Regrettably for Rodriguez and his legions of fans, it did not turn out to be his night, as he was taken out by his far more experienced foe. This, of course, is not the way he hoped things would go. Rodriguez looked back on the loss in a recent interview with BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor:

Tom Taylor - May 29, 2017

You’re probably very familiar with the story by now: earlier this month, at the UFC athletes retreat in Las Vegas, Nevada, UFC featherweight star Cris “Cyborg” Justino punched UFC strawweight Angela Magana. This blowout occurred after Magana made several offensive posts about Cyborg on social media. In the wake of this unfortunate event, many members of the MMA community seem to be siding with Cyborg – though Magana is pressing charges and the UFC is investigating the issue.

After quick KO of Cirkunov, Volkan Oezdemir wants Jimi Manuwa

Tom Taylor - May 29, 2017

On Sunday afternoon, in the co-main event of the UFC’s latest trip to beautiful Stockholm, Sweden, surging Swiss light heavyweight Volkan Oezdemir scored an upset, knockout win over the highly regarded Misha Cirkunov – and he did it in just 28 seconds. With this win, Oezdemir solidified his status as one of the top light heavyweights on the planet, and set himself up for what could well be a number one contender fight in his next outing. In the wake of this impressive win, Oezdemir made no secret of the fight he’d like next: a fight with British striking specialist Jimi Manuwa, who is also banging on the door of the champion Daniel Cormier.

Bob Arum: Manny Pacquiao "is there" to fight McGregor if Mayweather isn't

Tom Taylor - May 29, 2017

The biggest ongoing story in combat sports today surrounds a possible boxing mega fight between undefeated great Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor. At first, of course, this fight looked like a near impossibility. As the months have passed, however, red tape has been bushwhacked and roadblocks have been cleared, and the fight looks more and more like one that will actually happen.
