What’s next for Marcin Tybura and Tai Tuivasa after UFC Vegas 88?

By Cole Shelton - March 18, 2024

In the main event of UFC Vegas 88, ranked heavyweights threw down at the Apex as Marcin Tybura took on Tai Tuivasa.

Tai Tuivasa, Marcin Tybura

Tybura entered the fight coming off a first-round TKO loss to Tom Aspinall last summer, while Tuivasa was on a three-fight losing skid and coming off a stoppage loss to Alexander Volkov.

Ultimately, it was Tybura who won by first-round submission as he was able to get Tuivasa down and landed heavy shots before getting his back and sinking in a choke. Now, following UFC Vegas 88, here is what I think should be next for both fighters involved in the main event.

Marcin Tybura

Marcin Tybura was a slight underdog going into this fight and early on Tai Tuivasa landed some good shots and had cut open Tybura with some elbows. However, Tybura was able to get Tuivasa down and eventually got the choke to pick up a statement-making win.

With the win, Tybura will be ranked ninth and should get someone in the top-10 at heavyweight. The Pole has fought a lot of the top contenders but a logical next matchup is to face Jailton Almeida who is coming off a TKO loss to Curtis Blaydes. Almeida is ranked above Tybura and the winner of the fight could likely get a top-five opponent next.

Tai Tuivasa

Tai Tuivasa is now on a four-fight losing streak after UFC Vegas 88 and his future in the division is murky. This was a winnable fight for Tuivasa as he was a slight betting favorite. Early on he had success, but Tuivasa was submitted to lose his fourth straight defeat, and all four losses have come by stoppage.

Tuivasa will need another step down in competition following his UFC Vegas 88 and a logical next fight is to face Marcos Rogerio de Lima who is coming off a nice win over Junior Tafa. It’s a step down in competition and should Tuivasa win, it would be a ranked win for the Aussie to get back on track.
