Former two-division UFC champion Jon Jones wrote a classy message to Dustin Poirier amidst the former superstar’s legal issues.

One of the most beloved fighters in UFC history, Dustin Poirier, is in the headlines for all of the wrong reasons after he was arrested in Atlanta earlier this week.

Poirier, who retired from the UFC last year after a loss to Max Holloway in New Orleans, was arrested by Atlanta Police for ‘public intoxication’ at Atlanta International Airport on Sunday evening. In now-viral bodycam footage shared by TMZ, Poirier threatened and berated officers and airline staff after he was kicked off a flight for failing to follow passenger orders.

Poirier has since revealed he’s struggled with alcohol abuse since retiring from fighting last year. If convicted of ‘public intoxication’, a misdemeanor in Georgia, Poirier faces up to a year in prison and/or a fine.

But the potential punishment seems like the furthest thing from Poirier’s mind as he starts the path to sobriety. UFC legend Jon Jones, who has had his fair share of run-ins with the law in recent years, reached out to console Poirier.

In a recent tweet, Jones reached out to Poirier after revealing his struggles with alcohol since retiring from Mixed Martial Arts.

“Wanted to write and tell my n—- Dustin Poirier to keep your head up, life happens,” Jones tweeted.

“This too shall pass. Just keep yourself busy my man, it helps.”

In a follow-up tweet, Jones responded to a fan who asked if he has more respect for Poirier after admitting he has a problem with alcohol.

“I mean no, but I do respect the fact that he’s being honest about his mental state. I swear, in some weird way retiring from the UFC almost feels like retiring from the military or something. There’s so many similarities,” Jones said of Poirier.

“I have conversations with my special forces buddies about this type of stuff all the time; it’s a huge change or at least it can be.”

Jones retired from MMA last year after a long contract dispute with the UFC brass. After his exclusion from the recent UFC Freedom 250 card, Jones called for his release from the promotion after recent back-and-forths with UFC CEO Dana White.

In the meantime, Poirier continues to receive support from around combat sports as he faces arguably his toughest opponent yet.
