Dustin Poirier receives support from fellow UFC veteran amid arrest: “Some of us need to fight”

Dustin Poirier has garnered sympathy from a UFC lightweight veteran.
When Poirier retired from pro MMA competition at the conclusion of UFC 318 back in July 2025, many wondered what the future would hold for “The Diamond.” While Poirier has been active as a fight analyst and has his own hot sauce business, he admitted that he was lacking direction amid retirement.
Poirier’s worst fears appear to have reared its ugly head. The former interim UFC Lightweight Champion was arrested by the Atlanta Police Department after being kicked off a flight for berating attendants and trying to pick a fight with an officer. Poirier was taken into custody for public intoxication.
After being released on bond, Poirier issued a statement and he took responsibility for what transpired on Father’s Day weekend. Poirier admitted that he needs help and revealed a history of alcohol abuse in his family.
Drew Dober uploaded a new video on his Instagram page mentioning that as a fellow fighter, he understands that Poirier is in a rough spot following retirement. Dober even admitted that he fears slipping up once his own fighting career comes to an end (via MMAFighting).
“Some of us need to fight,” Dober said. “My thoughts go out to Dustin Poirier … But this is why I fear retirement, because some of us have found martial arts, found fighting, and constantly compete because we need it. We need it internally to make ourselves a better person. With our goals of just being better individuals, better family men, just better for others. We need fighting to keep ourselves straight.
”This is why I fear my retirement as well. I share that mentality as well with Dustin, and the fact that fighting has kept me out of making bad decisions, and being a better father, being a better husband, being a better son, being a better family man.”
Poirier faces up to one year in prison if he’s convicted of a misdemeanor charge. “The Diamond” said his family deserves to see him at 100 percent and he is trying to straighten things out mentally. Along with Dober’s comments, Poirier has mostly received support from the MMA community with the exception of Colby Covington.
