Gunnar Nelson issues statement on his withdrawal from UFC Liverpool

Gunnar Nelson

Unfortunate news broke yesterday when TheMMATakeover reported that Gunnar Nelson had suffered a knee injury and was forced out of his slated UFC Fight Night 130 co-main event bout with Neil Magny.

UFC Fight Night 130 takes place May 27 in Liverpool, England and is headlined by a key welterweight fight featuring former two-time title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson taking on undefeated contedner Darren Till.

The UFC is actively searching for a replacement for Gunnar Nelson, but as of the time of this article no opponent has been found for Neil Magny.

Gunnar Nelson, who is coming off a controversial loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio in his most recent performance, took to his Facebook earlier this afternoon where he issued the following statement on his injury and UFC Liverpool removal.

“Unfortunately I have to withdraw from my fight against Neil Magny on May 27th in Liverpool. Last weekend I injured my knee. I will undergo an operation right away and I´ll be out for 8-10 weeks. I’m sorry to my family, my opponent, my teammates, the fans and the UFC. This is a huge blow to me and I’m at a loss for words to describe the disappointment I am feeling. I was really feeling up for this fight, the training camp was going great and everything was just perfect until this happened. When all is said and done this is the fight business and injuries are sometimes an unfortunate part of it given the physical rigors us athletes put our bodies through. I will keep on evolving as a fighter while I’m on the sidelines and I’ll be back as soon as I can.” – Gunnar Nelson

Hopefully “Gunni” can make a quick recovery and get back inside the octagon soon.
