On Saturday night, undefeated WBC heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder reminded the world why he’s considered one of the hardest punchers in combat sports.

The champ returned to the ring opposite Dominic Breazeale. Heading into the fight, many sportsbooks had Wilder labeled as a -925 betting favorite or higher, and he promptly justified their confidence in him.

In the first round, Wilder put his foe down with a comet of a right hand. Breazeale would not recover. That was all she wrote.

Buzz is now higher than ever for a potential rematch between Wilder and Tyson Fury, or a fresh title fight between Wilder and unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

Post-fight, Joshua’s manager Eddie Hearn admitted he was impressed by this showing from Deontay Wilder and claimed that a Wilder-Joshua fight should happen next. First, of course, Joshua will need need to defeat Andy Ruiz on June 1.

“That was an impressive win for Deontay — he’s exciting to watch,” Hearn told Sky Sports (via Boxing Scene).

“He has taken care of business, now AJ needs to do the same against Ruiz Jr at Madison Square Garden on June 1. The fight with AJ and Wilder is the biggest fight in the sport and all being well in two weeks’ time it must happen next – no excuses, this is the fight that will change the sport globally.”

Deontay Wilder is now 41–0–1 overall with the lone blemish on his record being a controversial draw opposite Tyson Fury in late 2018. A whopping 40 of his victories have come by knockout.
