In the main event of UFC 196, Nate Diaz shocked the world as he submitted Conor McGregor in the 2nd round of their welterweight scrap. The fight was an exciting one, with McGregor gaining momentum before appearing to get rocked by Diaz. After a failed takedown attempt, Diaz secured the rear-naked choke to defeat McGregor.

In the 5th round of the co-main event scrap between Holly Holm and Miesha Tate, Miesha Tate secured a 5th round rear naked choke win to claim the UFC women’s bantamweight championship. Not only did Tate get the submission win, she choked Holm unconscious.

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm (10-1 MMA) squared off with former Strikeforce title holder Miesha Tate (18-5 MMA) in the co-main event of tonight’s UFC 196 per-per-view card in Las Vegas. Round one begins and there is a bit of a feeling out process. Holm with a front kick. Holly lands a jab and then a front kick. Tate throws a kick that misses. Miesha catches a Holm kick and trie for takedown but doesn’t get it. Holly with some lead left hands. Nice combo scores for Holm. Stiff left jab lands for Holly. Another font kick from Holm and then a lead left. Tate with a body kick. Nice front kick to the body by Holm. Nice left hand scores for Tate. She leads forward but misses with a punch. High kick partially lands for Holly. Round one comes to end.

A light heavyweight bout between Gian Villante (14-7 MMA) and Ilir Latifi (12-4 MMA) took place on tonight’s UFC 196 main card in Las Vegas. Round one begins and Vallante lands a leg kick to start. He follows that with a kick to the body. Latifi shoots in for a takedown but Gian stuffs it. The fighters battle against the fence. They break and Villante lands another good kick. More kicks from Gian. Big left hand scores for Latifi. He gets inside on Gian and lands a good combo. Ilir presses Villante against the fence. He lands a good shot and they break. Gian throws a good kick to end round one.

A light heavyweight bout between Corey Anderson (8-1 MMA) and Tom Lawlor (10-6 MMA) took place on tonight’s UFC 196 main card in Las Vegas. Round one begins and Anderson opens up with leg kick. Big shots land for Lawlor. He lands an uppercut and Cory is hurt. Anderson is on wobbly legs but lands a leg kick. Cory seems to have recovered and lands another good leg kick. Lawlor is pressing forward but is missing with his shots. Good jabs score for Anderson and then a right hand. Lawlor lands a good right hand and then a right hook. Big left hand finds a home for Anderson. Cory scores with another good leg kick. Tom responds with a right hook. Nice counter left scores for Anderson. The fighters exchange shots to close out round one.

A welterweight bout between Brandon Thatch (11-4 MMA) and Siyar Bahadurzada (22-6-1 MMA) served as the main attraction of tonight’s UFC 196 preliminary card in Las Vegas. Round one begins and Thatch opens with a high kick. Some solid leg kicks score for Thatch. Siyar presses forward with punches. Thatch is landing kicks at will but Bahadurzada is eating them and moving forward. Good exchange. The fighters clinch up and exchange knees. Good elbow from Brandon on the break. Both men start swinging for the fences. Thatch ducks under and lands a takedown. Bahadurzada is able to sweep Thatch and ends up on top. Good shots from Bahadurzada. Thatch attempts a triangle submission but it is not there. A few more shots from the top by Siyar as round one comes to an end.

A welterweight bout between Erick Silva (18-7 MMA) and Nordine Taleb (12-3 MMA) took place on tonight’s UFC 196 preliminary card in Las Vegas. Round one begins and Taleb opens with a leg kick. Nordine follows up with a head kick but misses. Silva fires a spinning back kick but does not connect. Huge right hand just misses from Silva. Taleb scores with a nice kick to the body. Leg kick from Nordine. Silva replies with a hard leg kick of his own. Taleb seems to have injured his left ankle. He is having a hard time finding his footing. Big body kick lands from Silva. Another nice body kick from Silva but Taleb catches the leg and takes Silva down. Eric is back up and throwing heavy shots. Nice leg kick from Silva. Nordine returns fire with a leg kick of his own. Good body kick from Taleb. Silva shoots in for a takedown but misses and eats a knee for his troubles to end round one.

A middleweight bout between Vitor Miranda (12-4 MMA) and Marcelo Guimaraes (9-2-1 MMA) took place on tonight’s UFC 196 preliminary card in Las Vegas. Round one begins and Miranda opens up with back-to-back head kicks. Guimaraes pushes forward and presses Vitor up against the fence. Marcelo is working hard for a takedown but Miranda is not having it. The fighters scramble and Guimaraes winds up in top position. Miranda gets back and they battle in the clinch. The referee steps in and forces the fighters to break. Miranda with a body kick. Good leg kick returned by Guimaraes and he follows that up with some solid shots. Marcelo is working for another takedown. Good elbows from Vitor while Marcelo tries to lock up his legs. The fighters break and then exchange leg kicks. Nice jab by Miranda. Guimaraes returns fire with a leg kick. Good combination before the end of round one by Miranda.

A featherweight bout between Darren Elkins (20-5 MMA) and Chas Skelly (15-2 MMA) kicked off the UFC 196 prelims on Fox Sports 1. Round one begins and Skelly lands a good shot to the body and then a big left hand. Elkins grabs a hold of Skelly and presses him up against the fence. Good knees and elbows by Elkins from the clinch. Skelly breaks free and lands some big shots on Elkins. Darren is bleeding but lands a takedown. Skelly grabs a leg and starts attempting a heel hook. It’s deep but Elkins breaks free. Another good leg lock attempt by Skelly but Darren is able to fight it off. They are back to their feet and Elkins lands a front kick and follows up with some great uppercuts. Skelly clinches up but it is Darren who is landing the better knees from the position. They separate and Skelly lands a good hook before being pressed up against the fence by Elkins. That is how round one ends.

A lightweight tilt between Jason Saggo (11-2 MMA) and Justin Salas (12-7 MMA) served as the second bout of tonight’s UFC 196 card in Las Vegas. Round one begins and Saggo opens up with a body kick followed by an inside leg kick. Salas presses forward with a left hand that is partially blocked. Saggo throws a hook kick but it misses and he gets taken down by Salas for his efforts. Saggo working for a submission from his back and eventually sweeps Salas and winds up in top position. Good elbows from Saggo who is now working in side control. Elbows and hammer fists from the top by Saggo. He is searching for an armbar but Salas defends. Saggo moves to the back of Salas and sinks in one hook. He gets both hooks in and starts pounding away on Salas. The ref steps in and it is all over!

A featherweight tilt between Julian Erosa (15-3 MMA) and Teruto Ishihara (8-2-2 MMA) kicked off tonight’s UFC 196 event in Las Vegas. Round one begins and Ishihara is applying some serious pressure to start. The Japanese fighter lands a solid inside leg kick on Erosa. More good leg kicks from Teruto and he follows that up with en excellent combo. Erosa is struggling to find his range. Ishihara lands another good leg kick but Erosa eats it and lands a solid front kick that actually knocks Ishihara down. Teruto bounces back up and lands a head kick followed by two solid shots on Erosa. Julian would score a late takedown to close out round one.

After Frankie Edgar KO’d Chad Mendes in the TUF 22 finale, Dana White promised him a UFC featherweight title shot. The next night Conor McGregor KO’d Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds to claim the UFC featherweight championship. Immediately following that fight, there was much speculation as to who would get the next featherweight title shot.
