Now that UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has released his statement regarding his retirement and UFC 200, fighters and fans have both began to take sides in the McGregor-UFC situation. While many take the UFC’s side and believe that McGregor should fulfill his media obligations for the July 9th event, others believe that McGregor should be allowed to focus on the fight itself rather than the promotional aspect of the event given the promotional work he has done in the past.

Thursday morning Conor McGregor broke his silence regarding his retirement and his fight against Nate Diaz at UFC 200. McGregor stated that the UFC’s media schedule for him ahead of the event was extremely tedious, and would have a significant impact on his training. McGregor believes that his media obligations ahead of UFC 196 sidetracked him from training, which ultimately contributed to his loss against Nate Diaz. McGregor left the ball in the UFC’s court, informing them that he is still ready to go for UFC 200, but he would not do the media obligations.

Tuesday morning Conor McGregor started a whirlwind as he announced his retirement from MMA. While the MMA community speculated as to why McGregor was retiring, UFC President Dana White went on SportsCenter and announced that McGregor had been pulled from UFC 200 for refusing to fulfill his media obligations. Thursday morning McGregor released a lengthy statement in which he revealed that he is not retired and will be ready to go for UFC 200, however he will not be doing a world tour for UFC 200, and will instead focus on his training. McGregor also pointed out that he got lost in the promoting aspect of fighting before his last fight. Whether or not McGregor fights now is up to the UFC.
