Report: UFC Fight Night 97 in Manila canceled due to 'drug testing issues'

On Thursday, the UFC announced that the UFC Fight Night event scheduled to take place in Manila was canceled and needs to be rescheduled. The full statement from the UFC reads:

When it was revealed that just 48 hours before UFC 200, interim light heavyweight champion Jon Jones would be unable to fight Daniel Cormier for the undisputed light heavyweight championship due to a failed out-of-competition drug test the month prior, former middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva stepped up to take Jones’ place. On just two days notice, Silva stepped into the Octagon on July 9th and fought Cormier in a non-title light heavyweight scrap.

Last month, Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson left the MMA world stunned when he knocked out heavyweight veteran Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva in the second round of their highly anticipated scrap in Brasilia. While the finish was an impressive one for Nelson, it was his post-fight actions that brought him attention. While referee Big John McCarthy was attending to Silva, who was still dazed and confused on the canvas, Nelson proceeded to give him the finger, and then deliver a running kick to McCarthy’s rear end while he was bent over attending to Silva. After the incident, UFC President Dana White, who often finds himself at odds with Nelson, stated that the fan-favorite heavyweight should be “buried” for his actions.

MMA Fighters Association calls for added weight classes to curb weight cutting

One of the most often-argued discussions in MMA is the idea of adding weight classes to the sport, and now the Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Association is calling for just that. The MMAFA released a statement this week detailing their proposal for adding new weight divisions in an effort to ‘curb weight cutting’, according to the press release.

Recently, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, and light heavyweight #1 contender Anthony Johnson took to Twitter to exchange verbal blows. Johnson called Cormier out for a fight at UFC 205, the UFC’s inaugural event at the Madison Square Garden, however Cormier was quick to shut down the idea, claiming his analyst duties for Fox Sports 1 would prevent him from fighting on November 12th.

With just 24 hours until former UFC middleweight champion Vitor Belfort needs to hit the scales for his middleweight scrap with Gegard Mousasi, ‘The Phenom’ is reportedly struggling with his weight cut. While there has been no word yet as to what Belfort is currently weighing, the situation is bad enough that the UFC has gone as far as to cancel several interviews that Belfort had scheduled, including several with ESPN affiliates.

The rematch between former UFC heavyweight champs Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez appears to be set for the UFC’s annual end of the year card, according to Werdum’s coach Rafael Cordiero. “Beniel Dariush is representing our team on 5 November in Mexico City and Werdum on December 30 in Vegas against Cain Velasquez. Go with everything!”, wrote Kings MMA head coach Rafael Cordeiro.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will return to the Octagon to defend his title at UFC 206 in Toronto, Canada. The event is scheduled to take place on December 10. Cormier made his announcement on Wednesday night’s “UFC Tonight” show on FOX Sports 1. Cormier is slated to face Anthony “Rumble” Johnson in another UFC light heavyweight title rematch. The two first met in the center of the Octagon at UFC 187 in May of 2015 where “DC” was able to submit Johnson by rear-naked choke in the third round, which earned Cormier the vacant UFC light heavyweight title after former champion Jon Jones was suspended after legal troubles with a hit-and-run car accident.

When it was announced earlier this year that #13 ranked UFC middleweight Dan Henderson would be getting first crack at Michael Bisping and his middleweight championship, there was widespread outrage regarding Bisping cutting the line to get a middleweight title shot. While many MMA fans wanted to see the UFC 100 rematch between Bisping and Henderson, the general consensus among fans was that Henderson shouldn’t receive a title shot, despite the fact that he has promised this will be his final MMA fight.

One of the biggest storylines to emerge from Rizin Fighting Federation’s latest card, which went down on September 25 in Saitama, Japan, was the reemergence of an age-old beef between “Felony” Charles Bennett and the much larger Wanderlei Silva. Bennett and Silva’s beef stems from an infamous 2005 locker room brawl. Footage of this brawl, which shows Bennett being choked out by Silva compatriot Cristiano Marcello, has been surfacing and resurfacing on the Internet for years. According to Bennett, however, the real reason for this beef is what occurred in the un-filmed portions of the incident. If the legends are to be believed, Bennett was able to knock Silva unconscious when the cameras weren’t rolling.
