After Irish superstar Conor McGregor, who reigned as the featherweight champion at the time, successfully made his lightweight debut in November when he TKOd Eddie Alvarez to capture the lightweight championship, he then opted to relinquish the featherweight championship. As a result, the UFC chose to promote interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo to the undisputed featherweight champion, and make this past Saturday’s UFC 206 main event scrap between Max Holloway & Anthony Pettis an interim featherweight championship fight. While the fight was initially slated to be the co-main event, after UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier withdrew from his scheduled headlining fight with Anthony Johnson due to a groin injury, the co-main event scrap between Holloway & Pettis was promoted to the main event.

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson continue to trade barbs on Twitter

Tom Taylor - December 13, 2016

With lightweight champion Conor McGregor currently on a hiatus from competition, during which he will father his first child with girlfriend Dee Devlin, the lightweight limelight is shining on two men: Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. Under normal circumstances, it would be difficult to deny either of these two dynamic contenders a lightweight title shot. With McGregor currently on the shelf, however, Nurmagomedov and Ferguson are faced with two options: wait for McGregor to return, and hope they win the sweepstakes to become his next opponent, or take another fight in the meantime.

Today, the UFC heavyweight division is ruled by Croatian-American destroyer Stipe Miocic. Miocic won the title back in May, when he flatlined an overaggressive Fabricio Werdum with a brilliantly placed punch. The heavyweight king then made a successful defense of his title in September, when he delivered his third straight first-round KO against decorated veteran Alistair Overeem. In the wake of his knockout of Overeem, Miocic has elected to take a bit of time off to recharge his batteries. While he does so, the heavyweight division’s highest ranked contenders, Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez, will battle for a shot at him when he’s ready to return.
