UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn is currently preparing to step into the Octagon with UFC veteran Dennis Siver Sunday night in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he will look to once again have his hand raised in front of fight fans. Ahead of the fight, many have questioned whether Penn plans to retire from MMA following the fight on Sunday, regardless of whether he wins or loses. While Penn has proven time and time again to have the indomitable spirit of a fighter, he spoke to MMAJunkie ahead of his fight with Siver to reveal that while he briefly considered retirement following his January loss to Yair Rodriguez, he quickly regained his fire to continue fighting:

Former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw’s upcoming fight remains a mystery as conflicting details continue to emerge, with no resolution on the conflict between The UFC and Demetrious Johnson to aid fight fans in making sense of the confusion. Dillashaw was initially slated to fight bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt in a highly anticipated bantamweight title fight this summer, however a back injury forced Garbrandt out of the fight. UFC President Dana White then revealed that the plan was to have Dillashaw drop down to flyweight and challenge flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson for the flyweight title in a fight that could have potentially seen Johnson set the UFC record for most successful title defenses.

Goldberg along with fellow veteran MMA broadcasting figure Mauro Ranallo were both announced as new acquisitions to the Bellator mixed martial arts promotion just over a week ago.

UFC lightweight #1 contender Khabib Nurmagomedov has been absent from the Octagon since his UFC 205 win over Michael Johnson, where he cemented his place as the lightweight #1 contender on the UFC’s official lightweight rankings. Following the fight, Nurmagomedov was booked to fight #2 ranked lightweight Tony Ferguson in a highly anticipated interim lightweight title fight that would see the winner fight Conor McGregor for the undisputed title when the Irish superstar returned to the Octagon. Unfortunately for Nurmagomedov, he was taken to the emergency room the night before weigh-ins, and was ultimately pulled from the fight.

Former UFC title contender Anthony Johnson shocked the MMA community when he announced his retirement following his light heavyweight title fight loss to champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 210 in April. “This was my last fight,” Johnson told Joe Rogan in the post-fight Octagon interview. “I didn’t tell anybody. I didn’t even tell Dana White. My coaches knew, my family knew and my friends knew. I didn’t want any distractions. But I have to thank you all for being there for me. I gave my commitment to another job. Something that I have wanted to do for a while. It is not MMA related or anything like that. It is just time for me to move on to something else. I’m tired of getting punched by guys and rolling around on the ground with guys and stuff like that. Ain’t nothing fun about that.”

Ahead of that fight, many fans have questioned when, or if, Conor McGregor will return to the UFC to defend his lightweight title after the fight with Mayweather given that McGregor won the lightweight championship in November of 2016 at UFC 205, when he cemented his place in the UFC history books as the first simultaneous two-division champion.

Over a year ago, Conor McGregor brought in South African boxing champion Chris Van Heerden to help him prepare for his rematch with Nate Diaz. Conor McGregor then posted footage of the pair sparring to his social media accounts, showing himself tagging Van Heerden repeatedly. That didn’t sit too well with Van Heerden, who was quick to fire back at McGregor and release the unedited footage of the sparring session. The footage remains the only footage of McGregor sparring against a professional boxer, however ahead of the Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match on August 26th, Mayweather’s assistant coach Nate Jones spoke to Submission Radio to explain why he isn’t sold on the footage being 100% legitimate.

In advance of this compelling scrap, Penn joined host Kinch on BJ Penn Radio to discuss Siver as an opponent. “I think he’s a great opponent,” Penn said of his Oklahoma City dance partner. “I think it’s a great matchup for me. Other people might not. I don’t know if Siver was watching my last fight [against Yair Rodriguez] and was like ‘oh we can capitalize here and there,’ but that’s on him. That’s his work he’s got to do. But I think he’s a great fighter. I’ve never really seen him be disrespectful to any opponents or anything like that. He’s just out there doing his thing.”
