Tonight, on the main card of UFC 214, former Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg will step into the Octagon against fellow former Invicta FC champion Tonya Evinger in a highly anticipated scrap for the vacant UFC women’s featherweight championship. For both contenders, the fight will mark the first time they fight in the Octagon at 145 pounds. While Cyborg has fought twice in the promotion, she has fought at a catchweight of 140 pounds on both occasions. Evinger on the other hand will not only be fighting in the UFC for the first time at 145 pounds, but also making her promotional debut.

Tonight, in the main event of UFC 214, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will step into the Octagon against former light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones in a highly anticipated rematch for the 205 pound strap. In the pair’s first meeting, Jones looked to defend his title for the eight time against his rival at UFC 182. Jones ultimately picked up a unanimous decision win over Cormier in January of 2015, however despite the UFC’s best efforts to schedule a rematch, the fight never took place.

Saturday night, the UFC will host the highly anticipated UFC 214 card. While the main card will air on pay-per view as usual, the preliminary card will not be aired on Fox Sports 1 as fight fans have become accustomed to. Instead, the preliminary card will air on FXX, a channel fight fans may not be as familiar with.

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway holds his ties to his home state of Hawaii very dear. At the end of 2016, the young contender defeated former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis to capture the interim UFC featherweight championship. This of course meant Holloway had secured himself a title fight with featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Last month the two met in the Octagon, where Holloway picked up a 3rd round TKO win over the champ to claim the undisputed featherweight title. After his win, talks of the UFC going to Hawaii became more serious than ever. While there has been no final word on when Holloway’s first title defense would be, Hawaii State Senator Glenn Waki expressed his desire to bring the UFC to Hawaii.

Friday morning during the UFC 214 early weigh-ins, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier’s team was involved in a bit of a verbal spat with former light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones’ brother, Arthur Jones. Arthur, the eldest Jones brother, is a star in his own right. An NFL Defensive tackle standing at 6’3 and 320 pounds, Arthur Jones has won two Super Bowl championships, and been named to the All-Big East First NFL team twice over the course of his career. In addition, Arthur has been praised by Jon Jones for his fighting skills in the gym as well.

Thursday afternoon at the UFC 214 media day, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, and former UFC light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones came face to face for yet another heated staredown ahead of their scrap on Saturday. Jon Jones, in an effort to make a statement about the physique of Cormier, hit the stage shirtless for the staredown. When the two men came face to face, they remained silent for most of the staredown as they locked eyes. Jones then appeared to say something to Cormier under his breath, that was not picked up by cameras.

Former Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg has had a very long, and tumultuous journey with the UFC. After finally being signed to the promotion last year, Cyborg competed at catchweight twice, before then being suspended by USADA for taking a pill to help her rehydrate. After being cleared of all wrongdoing by USADA, the stars finally aligned for the WMMA veteran to fight for the vacant women’s featherweight title. After Cyborg’s title fight was announced UFC President Dana White publicly stated that the UFC had made some mistakes in regards to how they handled Cyborg’s fights, and that they owed it to her to get her a title fight.

Cormier then reemerged just moments later and pressed down on the privacy towel to offset his weight, in order to make weight without cutting the weight. UFC on FOX 25 took place last weekend and the UFC has updated their rankings following their event that took place in Long Island, New York. In the main event of the evening, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman was able to get the monkey off his back and ended his three-fight losing streak by submitting Kelvin Gastelum in the third round. With the outcome of the match, both Weidman and Gastelum did not move in the UFC middleweight rankings as they both remain at their #5 and #8 respective positions.
