Mario Yamasaki and UFC should share blame for Priscila Cachoeira's prolonged beating

Tom Taylor - February 4, 2018

Former UFC bantamweight title challenger Valentina Shevchenko could not have been more impressive in her Saturday night flyweight debut, out-landing her opponent Priscila Cachoeira by a 230-3 margin en-route to a second-round submission win. Regrettably, much of the buzz surrounding this fight has been negative, as the widespread perception is that referee Mario Yamasaki let this ugly beatdown fester for far longer than it should have. Among those to trash the referee for his poor officiating was UFC President Dana White.

UFC Belem athlete outfitting pay: Lyoto Machida gets $20K, Valentina Shevchenko gets $5K

Tom Taylor - February 4, 2018

Last night, the UFC touched down in Belem, Brazil with UFC Fight Night 125. In the main event of this 11-fight card, struggling former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida turned back the clock with a close but impressive split decision win over formerly undefeated prospect Eryk Anders. In the co-main event, meanwhile, former UFC bantamweight title challenger Valentina Shevchenko authored one of the most lopsided victories of her impressive career thus far, eating Priscila Cachoeira alive in a brutal flyweight showdown.  At present, the official fight purses for this entertaining card have not yet been disclosed. We do, however, know how much the 22 fighters on the bill earned through the UFC’s athlete outfitting deal with Reebok.

Lyoto Machida interested in fight with fellow veteran Michael Bisping

Tom Taylor - February 4, 2018

Last night, in the main event of the UFC’s stop in Belem, Brazil, former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida staved off Father Time with a sorely needed split decision win over young middleweight prospect Eryk Anders. With this win, Machida rebounded from a string of stoppage losses and kept himself afloat in the shark infested waters of the middleweight division. While Machida is now back in the win column, calls for his retirement have not exactly quieted. That said, the Brazilian legend still has a few more things he’d like to accomplish before he hangs up the gloves. One of these things is a fight with former UFC middleweight champion and fellow MMA veteran Michael Bisping.

Last night, in the main event of the UFC’s anticipated stop in Belem, Brazil, former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida attempted to rebound from a string of stoppage losses opposite dangerous undefeated prospect Eryk Anders. Though Anders certainly didn’t make it easy for him, Machida ultimately earned his first win since December of 2014 with a split decision. Understandably, many members of the MMA community were very impressed by Machida’s turning away of Father Time. That said, many others felt the decision should have been awarded to Anders.

Eryk Anders issues classy statement after losing first pro fight to Lyoto Machida

Tom Taylor - February 4, 2018

Last night, in the main event of the UFC’s stop in Belem, Brazil, former football player and current UFC middleweight prospect Eryk Anders took on the biggest test of his career thus far in former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Unfortunately for Anders, the amply more experienced Machida proved a little too much to handle, and he came up short via split decision after five rounds. While Eryk Anders has now tasted defeat for the first time as a pro mixed martial artist, he doesn’t seem to be too discouraged. In fact, he seems keen to treat this loss as a learning experience.

Daniel Cormier Going Back to Light Heavyweight Win or Lose Against Stipe Miocic

Justin Golightly - February 3, 2018

We’ll be daydreaming about Daniel Cormier’s fight against Stipe Miocic until it gets here in July, but until then we have five months of speculation and debates. Media and fans a like are wondering what will happen if the UFC light heavyweight champion will do if he actually manages to beat Miocic for the heavyweight belt. Some predicts he’d just retire early, instead of fighting until March 2019. Instead, Cormier not only plans to keep fighting, but move immediately back down in weight. “It’s gonna suck [dropping back down]. Every time it sucks, but it’s my weight class. I owe it to the guys in the division to go back down and fight them. If Alexander Gustafsson wants a fight like he’s saying, I’ll go back down and fight him. But he should fight again, because he barely fights. I’ve fought five times since he and I fought. He’s fought twice. He needs to fight again before we fight. If I fight in July [at UFC 226], I probably won’t be able to fight until the end of the year again. So, Alex should not have been sitting for a year-and-a-half and just waiting for a title shot. That doesn’t make any sense.” — Daniel Cormier speaking to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

BREAKING | Max Holloway Injured, Out of Frankie Edgar Fight at UFC 222

Justin Golightly - February 3, 2018

There is a yin and a yang to everything. The universe must always balance itself. The MMA gods must have pulled out all the stops to make the three gigantic super fights expected for 2018. By booking Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic – and attempting to put together fights with Demetrious Johnson, TJ Dillashaw, Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes – it was inevitable something had to go. According to a breaking report, Max Holloway suffered and undisclosed injury that will take him out of his title defense against Frankie Edgar at UFC 222. “According to sources, featherweight champion Max Holloway has suffered an injury that will prevent him from defending his title against Frankie Edgar. The UFC has not officially pulled Holloway from the event, but is expected to do so shortly. The promotion is already in the process of exploring other options for its main event.” – as reported by Brett Okamoto via ESPN.
