One of if not The Ultimate Fighter’s biggest underdog in the show’s history has blossomed into one of the finest mixed martial artists in the world today. The young twenty-one year old at the time, Kelvin Gastelum wasn’t expected to make it very far on his season(17) of TUF but ended up winning the whole thing. Fast forward five years and he’s one of the very best young talents in the game. Gastelum was a career middleweight until he won TUF 17 where he would go on to drop to welterweight afterward before winning some big fights but having weight troubles at the same time. He now finds himself back at 185-pounds and potentially just one win away from his first ever UFC title shot.

Looks like we will be getting Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson vs Darren Till after all! The two were initially expected to fight back at what ended up being UFC on Fox 28 on February 24th expect in London. However, things didn’t pan out as Wonderboy was still recovering from thumb injuries that occurred in his last outing at UFC 217 in November.

Every week and every day is just a countdown to UFC 223 where we hope we finally get to see Khabib Nurmagomedov fighting Tony Ferguson for, some sort of UFC title. We all know it does to the ground. Ferguson is confident that he’ll be able to hold his own there and slice open Nurmagomedov on the bottom, while the Russian smashing machine knows it is Khabib Time. Meanwhile, Chael Sonnen is out here denouncing Sambo, but still praising Nurmagomedov. “Sambo sucks, Sambo has always sucked and I don’t believe Khabib [Nurmagomedov] is a Sambo player. I think somewhere he just wanted to pay respect to Sambo. Being Dagestani, I believe he got the skills he got in a wrestling room. He clings to that Sambo. In the history of them setting up that [UFC] cage, there has never been a contender – let alone a stand-out – that was good at Sambo. It sucks. It’s not real. It’s a fake sport.”

If you’re not familiar with how things usually go for most UFC fighters, you get money to show and money to win. Some fighters have negotiated flat rates for some fights, most notably fighters like Conor McGregor and Frankie Edgar. Joe Rogan isn’t a fan of the system and thinks it should be done away with, especially with the way fights are judged lately. “I just don’t like the win bonus. I don’t think anybody fights harder for it. […] That to me is a real issue. I think a guy should be paid what they get paid. I think if you have a contract, that contract should be for ‘X’ amount of money. If you have points on the pay-per-view, that’s on top of that.”

Kevin Lee returns back into action at UFC Atlantic City against Edson Barboza, in what is sure to be a wild scrap. Both men will be looking to bounce back after their big losses to elite competition, but Lee doesn’t intend on just stopping there. Kevin Lee reveals the plan is to take care of Barboza in more devastating fashion than both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, then fight Nurmagomedov. “I think me and Khabib [Nurmagomedov] are the fight to make after this. […] I think I’m still the marquee fight in this division for anybody. You know, me and Khabib will sell big, me and Tony [Ferguson] got a rematch that will sell big, me and [Conor] McGregor will sell big. So, it’s a lot of big fights left on the horizon. […] 100 percent after this one, I’ll beat Edson [Barboza] in New Jersey and then I’ll go out there and beat Khabib in Russia. And then, who knows, maybe we’ll throw a stadium show with Conor McGregor in the future in Ireland.”

On April 7, in the main event of UFC 223, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will battle for the UFC lightweight title. The winner of this fight is then likely to battle the current lightweight champion Conor McGregor – who will probably be stripped in the coming weeks – somewhere down the line.

Last weekend, in the main event of the UFC’s exciting trip to London, England, former Bellator heavyweight champ Alexander Volkov stepped into the cage with former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum. This bout stood out as one of the toughest tests of Volkov’s career thus far, not just because Werdum is such a dangerous foe, but because he is one of Volkov’s former training partners. Ahead of his September 2016 rematch with the towering Travis Browne, Werdum invited the 6’8 Volkov to join his camp and help him prepare. The pair came to be friends during this period of preparation, which added an interesting x-factor to their UFC London scrap.

UFC 222 marked the first time “Alpha” Cat Zingano made the walk to the octagon since UFC 200 in July of 2016. Unfortunately, the return to action against undefeated rising Brazilian contender, Ketlen Vieira did not go as Zingano had planned. Vieira would end up earning the split decision victory in what was a tough battle that extended her winning streak to ten and Zingano’s losing streak to three(the first and only skid of her career).
