In the opinion of former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre, current UFC middleweight Robert Whittaker is the perfect ambassador for the sport of MMA. The Canadian MMA legend gave his take on the Australian champion in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. “He’s a great example and a perfect role model for the sport of mixed martial arts – and you cannot have a better ambassador for the sport,” St-Pierre said. “You guys have the dream guy coming from Australia to represent you.”

Fighting in the light heavyweight division for the first time in his career, Anthony “Lionheart” Smith will enter his new division by facing a former champion. At UFC 225, Smith will take on former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans in what could be a launching pad in his new division and his larger career. Facing the former champion is something Smith has prepared himself for, and he believes that he’s in the best possible place to get a win as he debuts in the light heavyweight division.

On Friday morning, the many stars on the UFC 225 bill took to the scales to weigh in for the respective battles. For a moment, it looked as though UFC 225 would go down as one of the rare cards for which no fighters missed weight. Regrettably, the last fighter to weigh in, headliner Yoel Romero, missed weight by one pound, tipping the scales at 186. Per the rules in Illinois, where the card is set to occur, Romero will now have two hours to lose this additional pound and reach the 185-pound limit for middleweight title fights.

Initially, American welterweight Alan Jouban wasn’t very excited about the possibility of flying all the way to Hamburg, Germany to fight Danny Roberts on July 22. He even thought about turning the fight down. But then, amid the UFC’s ostensible release of Yair Rodriguez, and the difficulty some of his teammates were having getting fights, Jouban decided he’d be better off accepting the fight.

Last night, the Professional Fighters League kickstarted its inaugural season with PFL 1, which went down inside the Hulu Theatre in Madison Square Garden. The event featured the opening rounds of the promotion’s heavyweight and featherweight tournaments. The card was packed to capacity with excitement. Most notably, it began with a slew of first-round finishes, as Alexandre Almeida, Francimar Barroso and Kevin Tiller put their foes away early.

After watching Darren Till get a hero’s reception in his hometown of Liverpool, welterweight contender Kamaru Usman is hoping for a similar experience in Africa. While Usman hails from Nigeria, he feels that, if the UFC called on all of its African stars, it could sell out a stadium in pretty much any African nation. In a perfect world, Usman can imagine himself, Cameroonian-French heavyweight Francis Ngannou, Nigerian-born Kiwi middleweight Israel Adesanya, and Ghanaian welterweight Abdul Razak Alhassan, all competing on a star-studded card in a stadium somewhere on the African continent.

In the opinion of former pro wrestler CM Punk, who will take on Mike Jackson in the first bout of the UFC 225 main card this Saturday, fighters have no excuse for missing weight. Punk believes he and his fellow Chicagoan Belal Muhammad are all the proof of this claim that’s required. Punk, after all, expects to make weight despite spending the last two weeks battling a long and emotionally-taxing lawsuit. Muhammad, meanwhile, made weight for his June 1 bout with Chance Rencountre despite fasting through Ramadan. Punk believes that iff they can make weight through these challenges, anybody can.

This weekend, in the main event of UFC 225, Yoel Romero will battle Robert Whittaker for the UFC middleweight title. From the sounds of it, this might not be the only title fight in Romero’s future. Speaking at a UFC 225 media scrum, Romero was asked about the possibility of moving up to the 205-pound light heavyweight division for a battle with divisional champion Daniel Cormier, a fellow Olympic wrestler. Apparently, he’s into the idea.
