Jake Shields updates on potential comebacks of Nick and Nate Diaz

Tom Taylor - May 3, 2018

It’s a great time to be a fan of Nick and Nate Diaz. Though neither has fought in a quite awhile, there is reason to believe both could return to the cage soon, as Nick’s USADA suspension recently ended, and Nate has recently been linked to the upcoming UFC 227 card. In the opinion of former Strikeforce middleweight champ and current PFL star Jake Shields, who has trained extensively with both Diaz brothers in the past, Nate in particular is likely to compete again before all is said and done.

Earlier this week, news surfaced that former Strikeforce welterweight champ and UFC welterweight title challenger Nick Diaz had accepted a one-year sanction after failing to appear for three mandated United States Anti-Doping Agency drug tests—a violation of the agency’s “UFC Whereabouts Policy”. This suspension is retroactive to April 19, 2017, which means that it will be over on April 19, 2018. After that date, Diaz will be free to begin competing in the UFC again, should he so choose. USADA announced today that Nick Diaz, of Stockton, Calif., has accepted a one-year sanction for a violation of the UFC® Anti-Doping Policy resulting from three unsuccessful test attempts during a 12-month period,” a Monday USADA release on the matter read.

VIDEO | Dana White Thinks Nick Diaz is More Interested in Fighting Than Nate Diaz

Justin Golightly - February 24, 2018

The UFC has been playing the hot and cold game with Nate Diaz for as long as grizzled veteran MMA fans can remember. It wasn’t until he took out Conor McGregor and then fought him again, earning the first and second place of most pay-per-view buys of all-time, that Diaz was able to play the game back. He had leverage and still does. Despite a back-and-forth about a possible Tyron Woodley fight, White doesn’t believe he’ll return unless it’s to finish the trilogy with McGregor. Older brother Nick Diaz though, may be a different story. “The thing is for Nate Diaz, We’ve been offering Nate Diaz fights, Nate doesn’t want to fight and right now Nate isn’t in line for a title shot. [Rafael] dos Anjos just beat Robbie Lawler, which is a big deal, and was very impressive in how he did it. He deserves the fight [with Tyron Woodley]. […] We’ve been offering [Diaz] fights. Guys don’t just come out and say, ‘Yeah, I want fights’ and then we don’t react on it. We’ve been hitting him up since the last time he fought, offering him fights and he’s not interested in fighting.”

Joe Rogan praises Cerrone and Medeiros for their fight, Nick Diaz disagrees

Tom Taylor - February 22, 2018

On Thursday morning, UFC color commentator Joe Rogan took to Instagram to praise Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Yancy Medeiros for their thrilling scrap at UFC Austin – a card he was off-duty for.  Rogan, like many, was blown away by the respect the two welterweights showed each other during this brief but exciting battle. I just got home from the @icehousecc and decided to unwind by rewatching this epic fight between @yancymedeiros and @cowboycerrone. This fight wasn’t just epic because it launched cowboy into a 3 way tie with @mikebisping and @georgesstpierre for the most wins ever in the UFC (20). It was also a special fight in that one of the things that was so enjoyable about the fight was the respect the two had for each other, both before and after their one round of chaos. They even embraced in friendship in the middle of a round, and I fucking loved it. They briefly paused to hug and then went right back to a full tilt brawl. They both just went for it with pure respect and love for each other, and they both swung for the fences. Cowboy wound up connecting with a pinpoint right hand and wound up getting the stoppage right before the buzzer. It was epic, and then again, after it was over there was nothing but love and respect. I thought it was all around an awesome experience to watch it even a second time. Thank you, gentlemen, for a great moment in MMA, and a really fun fight to watch.

VIDEO | Nick Diaz Tours the Massive UFC Performance Institute

Justin Golightly - January 10, 2018

No question the UFC’s new Performance Institute is incredible. Francis Ngannou has practically moved in since transplanting to Las Vegas. It’s an enormous facility complete with the most up-to-date and cutting edge ways for any professional fighter to train and recover, provided at absolutely no cost to current UFC athletes. They even have comped meals. Which brings us to Nick Diaz: Was his visit prompted by a bout of the munchies, or is he serious about coming back again? Diaz recently took a tour with UFC’s Vice President of Health and Performance, Jeff Novitzky. “I think [Nick Diaz] does [want to fight], I think he does. I’ve sat down with him over the past couple months trying to resolve this whereabouts issues. The unfortunate thing there is, look, the whereabouts failures are there to catch people that are cheating and trying to avoid testing. I just think Nick’s lifestyle led to those three whereabouts, not that he was trying to avoid testing. We’re trying to work through that. [Nick] trusted certain individuals to do his whereabouts for him. What I think happened was, over time, those individuals were in and out of his life, and it was unbeknownst to him that he was missing all these things. But again, there’s strict liability here. He’s currently under sanction, but we’re hoping to resolve that pretty quick.” — Jeff Novitzky talking to Joe Rogan on his MMA show.

UFC exec believes Nick Diaz might fight again

Tom Taylor - January 4, 2018

It has now been almost three years since Nick Diaz’s last fight, a January 2015 no contest with middleweight legend Anderson Silva. That said, there is still widespread hope that he will one day return to the cage. While UFC President Dana White isn’t optimistic we’ll ever see the older Diaz brother back in the Octagon, UFC VP of athlete health and performance Jeff Novitzky believes we might. He thinks the fighter just needs to work through the issues stemming from his failure to report his whereabouts, as required by USADA.

VIDEO | Nick Diaz Made His UFC Debut 14 Years Ago Today

Justin Golightly - September 26, 2017

A lot of images and feelings come to mind when the name Nick Diaz is brought up. He’s shadow boxed during awkward interviews right into our heart for many years. He could usually be found constantly looking over his shoulder, most likely after ridiculously exciting fights. Lately though, anti-doping violations caused by marijuana has simultaneously nearly ended, and revitalized his career. His suspension has long been up, but he neglects to pay the rest of his fine, instead spending his time making bank off of appearances and many partnerships with cannabis companies. Let’s travel back to a simpler time when Diaz was walking opponents down and pressuring them with his boxing until things inevitably end on the ground. Sep26.2003

Nick Diaz blasts USADA for trying to test him when he's smoking "a bunch of weed"

Tom Taylor - August 8, 2017

Former Strikeforce welterweight champ and eternal fan favorite Nick Diaz has not been seen in the Octagon since January of 2015, when he gave up a decision to Anderson Silva in a fight that was ultimately ruled a no contest after he tested positive for marijuana, and Silva tested positive for more serious banned substances. Given his lengthy layoff, there is increasing doubt that Nick Diaz will ever return to the cage. UFC President Dana White, for example, is not optimistic.

Anderson Silva calls for a fight with an old foe

Tom Taylor - July 17, 2017

It has now been several months since we’ve seen former UFC middleweight champion and bona fide MMA legend Anderson Silva in the cage. Though he was briefly scheduled for a UFC 212 battle with surging middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum, this plan fell through when Gastelum was flagged for marijuana metabolites, leaving Silva glued to the sidelines without a fight. Based on a Sunday evening Instagram post, it seems as though the middleweight legend is attempting to rectify his inactivity. In his post, Silva called out Nick Diaz, who he battled back in early 2015.
