Saturday afternoon, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes was hospitalized prior to her UFC 213 main event title defense against Valentina Shevchenko. Ultimately, Nunes was pulled from the card, despite UFC President Dana White revealing after the fact that Nunes was actually cleared to fight. Following the announcement of Nunes being pulled from the fight, UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk began to campaign for the UFC to put her in for Nunes against Shevchenko. Shevchenko was quick to respond, accepting Jedrejczyk’s challenge, and even going as far as to campaign for the fight to be for the inaugural flyweight title.

Saturday afternoon the MMA community was stunned to learn that just hours before she was scheduled to step into the Octagon to fight Valentina Shevchenko, Amanda Nunes had been pulled from the card after being hospitalized. Without missing a beat, UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk offered to step in and fight Shevchenko on short notice given that she was already in Las Vegas. Jedrzejczyk took to social media in an attempt to pressure the UFC to help her get cleared to fight on short notice.

UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is one of the most dominant champions in the UFC today. Since winning the title from inaugural champion Carla Esparza with a violent, second-round beatdown, she has defended it with impressive wins against Jessica Penne, Valerie Letourneau, Claudia Gadelha, Karolina Kowalkiewicz and most recently, the dangerous Jessica Andrade. And while she still has a few big challenges remaining at strawweight, it sounds like she may begin a reign of dominance in the UFC’s newly announced women’s flyweight division too. The champion of this new flyweight division will be crowned on an upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter, and apparently, Jedrzejczyk is interested in fighting that inaugural flyweight champ sometime next year.

This challenge will be provided by streaking Brazilian contender Jessica Andrade. When we last saw Jedrzejczyk in action, she defeated fellow Polish striker Karolina Kowalkiewicz in the first of three title fights on November’s UFC 205 lineup. This win marked her fourth consecutive defense of the UFC strawweight title. She proceeded this fourth defense with decision wins over Claudia Gadelha and Valerie Letourneau, a bloody TKO defeat of Jessica Penne, and a second-round bludgeoning of Carla Esparza, which earned her the divisional crown. The strawweight queen currently owns a flawless pro record of 13-0.
