At UFC 299, Dustin Poirier will go head to head with Benoit Saint Denis. It serves as the biggest test in BSD’s career thus far, as he prepares to take on one of the all-time lightweight greats. ‘The Diamond’ will be defending his turf as the veteran, whereas Saint Denis wants to prove that his time has arrived.

Regardless of which way you look at it, this is a fascinating bout. In terms of Fight of the Night potential, this one has to be located towards the top of the list.

In a recent interview, Poirier was asked why he’s agreed to take on such a risky fight.

Poirier looks to the future

“To test myself really,” Poirier explained to TMZ Sports. “To see if I still got it. This guy is young, hungry, on a streak, has finished his last five opponents. That makes me nervous, so I want to toss myself in the fire. There’s where I feel I do my best work, and those are the kinds of fighters I want to fight. Guys who are leaving it all out there, showing grit, they fight for finishes. That’s the kind of fight I want to be involved in.”

“Every fight could be it,” Poirier concluded. “Every fight. Where I’m at, 35 years old, this is my 30th fight in the UFC. Every fight could be it.”
