Teddy Atlas thinks Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua is “cash grab,” but won’t rule out entertaining fight

Legendary boxing trainer Teddy Atlas won’t deny that he feels Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua is a late money play, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a fun scrap.

Fury and Joshua have tune-up fights scheduled in the next few days. Fury will be traveling to Pattaya in Thailand to face Mariusz Wach on Friday. The following day, Joshua will be in Jeddah to throw down with Kristian Prenga. If “The Gypsy King” and “AJ” win their respective bouts, it would set the stage for a clash between the two.

The general consensus is that Fury vs. Joshua is long overdue with some even considering the bout to be past its expiration date. During an interview with CanadaCasino (via BoxingScene), Atlas said it’s obvious that neither man is in their prime and a bout between the two at this point is more for the spectacle.

“It’s definitely a money grab,” Atlas said. “Joshua is two fights on from being knocked out badly against Dubois, Fury has lost a couple of times to Usyk, and both of them have lost their most significant fights of recent times.

“There is no arguing that both of them have slippage in their performances and in their careers at this point in their lives. They are not spring chickens anymore. They have been in tough fights, and it shows.”

Still, Atlas won’t dismiss the possibility that Fury and Joshua could still provide fireworks in a heavyweight battle.

“The one thing that was not diminished was their character, their resolve, their determination and their championship qualities. So yes, Fury vs Joshua is late, and yes, it’s a money grab, but it still might give you some of that because they’re heavyweights.”

Many have been wondering how Joshua will look after being shaken up in a traumatic car accident back in late 2025. Joshua lost two close friends of his in the tragedy. Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn has said he’s inspired by Joshua’s willingness to step back inside the ring.
