Father of Teofimo Lopez rants following lackluster Jamaine Ortiz fight: “They should get rid of people like this in boxing”

By Fernando Quiles - February 9, 2024

The father of Teofimo Lopez wasn’t thrilled with the strategy put forth by “The Takeover’s” opponent Jamaine Ortiz.

Teofimo Lopez vs. Jamaine Ortiz

Lopez and Ortiz had a lackluster fight inside the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada this past Thursday night. There wasn’t much offense in this one, as Ortiz was on his bicycle and Lopez couldn’t cut off the ring. This made for a bout that very few fight fans will want to remember. In the end, this one went the distance and Lopez was awarded the unanimous decision win, retaining his WBO junior welterweight gold in the process.

Now, Teofimo’s outspoken father has some words for Jamaine Ortiz’s game plan.

Teofimo Lopez’s Father Goes After Jamaine Ortiz’s Strategy

Backstage after the title fight, Teofimo Lopez Sr. spoke to Fight Hub TV, and he suggested that fighters like Jamaine Ortiz should be out of the sport of boxing for not engaging in fights (via BadLeftHook.com).

“I think the 117-111, alright man, but I had him winning almost every round. Like this is crazy. If you want to come here, if he wanted to box, okay, I can understand that but you got to let your hands go while you box.

“This guy came, literally just running without letting his hands go because he knew if he would’ve tried to touch or tried to throw while he was running he would’ve got countered. We waited for that but it never happened, he never came for it.

“Totally, we had more punches than him, he was missing everything that he sometimes threw. But we’re happy with the win, we go another day. Hopefully we get a better dancing partner next time ‘cause this was ridiculous. They should get rid of people like this in boxing, for real.”
